In the early days of only JP chuubas, clippers were also translators, and a lot of work was involved in clipping JP chuubas as a result.
And people watched these because that was all they had, and they were a dedicated bunch.
/jp/ culture of doing reps also was a big thing back then, because you were told that you were missing out on so much content because of not knowing Japanese (I can confirm this from experience, not a single clipper has translated Lamy's stream after her wine won an award for example).

These early fans have now /become/ and you won't be able to distinguish them in HoloJP chat. ENfags have many MANY more options for content now, and so translation itself became a labor of love. Some dedicated clippers like Major Arcana, Hololive-are-Idols and Steven H still persist, but they clip in order to spread their oshis word, not for money.

Sushi is the antithesis of this, and is completely useless to that initial audience that watches JP streams.
But he serves as the newfag gateway into HoloJP now.
