Every image I've seen that's tried to communicate the concept are brightly colored fragments
but I can tell you, the dust in my house is neither that large no brightly colored
and my food certainly doesn't have it

so is this an american problem or are the articles that try to describe the problem do it a disservice by trying to dumb it down with pretty pictures

You know that MICRO means microscopic, correct? You might be able to see something like those colored bits under a scope. Anything, especially heated in plastic, is going to have the potential to give off particles, and depending on the littering and waste in your country and the water filter quality, it will at least be in your water supply.

I don't know about fragments chipping off, but the chemicals used to create plastics (which are toxic) exist in all corners of the planet and inside all living beings. Even polar bears in the Arctic and unborn children have it in their bodies. Word of advice, don't microwave or heat any sort of plastic container, otherwise it'll leach into whatever you're about to eat/drink.

Some particles of microplastics can obstruct metabolical pathways throughout the body like hormone receptors and protein synthesis. Ones that are small enough can potentially even move through the blood-brain barrier. There is nothing in those pictures that you can see that are that fucking small. You need a microscope to see them because they are literally less than 10 micrometers in size.
