Ignoring the reality of technology not being there, how different do you think the culture would be?
Do you think it'd be better, given the status of the internet and world back then?
Do you think it'd be worse, given the status of the internet and world back then?
For this scenario just imagine v-tubing software is all that's really as advanced as today. Ignore the necessary computing power.
Things like streaming are most definitely no go, but forum sharing, youtube (eventually), posts to 2chan, etc, are all good.

Nah 2chan was kickin and Anime was in force in America. Fox news even showcases 4chan and anime in 2007.

Beyond that letsplays were already popular. Especially forum letsplayers where they post video or text with pictures. Not hard to imagine a cute vtuber posting 480p videos for you to consume, atleast on the jap net.

Pretty sure every forum would kick you out and it'd take a day to upload anywhere.
Would you buy your own domain or start a blog?

Those aren't the cultural elements that VTubers are rooted in. Stuff like seiyuu idol culture, vocaloid culture, utaite culture, the Japanese social norms when it came to video uploads and streaming, this kind of stuff wasn't present in 2004.

I'm sure someone would've created a separate chan dedicated to the discussion chuubas back then

>> No.2705028

>>2704925
No need to have agencies or anything like that. And yeah, vocaloid culture was literally born in 2004, but there's no reason V-Tubing couldn't grow up next to it.

At the core of it is an anime girl playing vidya. No reason it couldn't start earlier given the tech is there, although I'll admit it would be somewhat niche until higher quality becomes available. Especially since 2020s are a time of hyper connectivity and acceptation, unlike the 2000s, so acceptation of anime girls playing games would be low worldwide.

What caused the concept of characters playing games to 'die' was the competition offered by people commentating, either with face cam or just their voice. This killed forum letsplayers and elsewise.

Fanmade Flash games and movies of characters would be everywhere, and if Macromedia could ride on the trend and integrate mocap input into Flash, the plugin would still be alive in 2021.

Wouldn't exist. It took awhile to monetize the internet's media, especially for content creators. Nothing on the scale of hololive could exist without streaming or youtube, especially a youtube made for casual video viewing and uploading.

I can imagine a VTuber with an I'MA FIRING MY LAZERS transition, Chammers-like arch where they go to Mootxico to graduate from university with a minor in Spanish, etc.

when facerig first came out people were predicting v-tubers
yes the culture is a major part but it's unnecessary, v-tubing as an extension of AR would come about no matter the culture.

>> No.2705288

>>2705028
I thought the core of it was "anime girl talking directly to the audience", streaming gameplay with the model seems to be a recent innovation. Obviously not the actual definition, just a summary; though the first VTubers had an anime aesthetic anyway, and the medium is rooted in Japanese animated entertainment.

Moe and especially idol culture had not yet become ultra-prominent amongst the anime sphere by then, so it'd probably be a lot more action-shonen/zany comedy type designs.

Moe did exist but SoL/iyashikei type things weren't really all the rage yet. So you'd see things like a bunch of action-shonen fantasy sidekick type chars. Mahou shojo for sure, tons of them. Probably a bunch of Galaxy Angel wannabe comedian types; Peko would have modeled herself off that show almost for-sure. There were a couple moe shows back then but wasn't yet the dominant force, so you'd probably see a number of types inspired by shows like Azumanga which was kind of the breakout point for the format.

i won't deny what you say but i think it's giving too much credit to the people who brought it to popularity. there was shit like this all the way back in 2015
https://store.steampowered.com/app/420680/FaceRig_Live2D_Module/
waiting to be used for videos and livestreaming. the main issue was a lack of acceptance which took years to build up. it's hard playing could've would've but i see no reason the concept couldn't take off without the specific culture we see today.

more than anything current society's fascination and embracement of technology and general acceptance/multiculturalism allows v-tubing to thrive.

further i think it would be very niche in the 2000s
there, but niche.

however i think you could have a scenario like when hatsune miku when on tour where american media is stunned by the novelty of it

Who predicted VTubers when FaceRig came out? It only came out 1-2 years before Kizuna Ai. And I disagree with culture not being unnecessary; the whole thing started in Japan because it's derived from Japanese Internet norms of anonymity e.g. the reason why a lot of Japanese content creators don't show their face or wear masks when uploading/streaming videos.

General audiences. It was something thought of with a lack of seriousness, but an appreciation for the possibility.
Again, a lack of seriousness, but people realized the possible appeal of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsdBRHLagN0

I think virtual avatars would become entertainers no matter the timeline. All that differs is when and who ignites the spark. Max Headroom, among others, was appreciated by general audiences for the unique entertainment experience of virtual entertainers:
https://youtu.be/cYdpOjletnc

The second VR chat started taking off, and society started getting used to viewing and interacting with virtual reality and it's avatars, is the second V-Tubing became possible.
I 100% agree Japan was a great spark to get it going, in your view a necessary spark, but I disagree with it being 'the' necessary spark. It would've happened eventually.
