This article is in response to the “Stalingrad oshi” – my own take on the story of the legendary Soviet colonel Semyon Ivanovich Timoshenko, nicknamed “Oshkolo” in his native Georgia. What I set out to do was to try to portray the personality and the life of a Georgian partisan in the context of the Stalingrad battlefield, and to discuss what happened to Timoshenko and his band of “Oshkolki” patriots, during the three-month battle.
Why write about Timoshenko? It is not as if the former Soviet military adviser, politician, and writer Timoshenko is a total unknown; he is, indeed, the former chairman of the State Planning Committee of the USSR and was for more than two decades an advisor to General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev
