To be fair, the Vtuber is a synthesis between design and the actress. Once either element is gone, the Vtuber as a whole is effectively dead. The design without the same voice is not the same character, and the actress without the design no longer has the image that she formerly projected. Effectively, OP is sort of right. The voices of Coco and Rushia live on, but the characters are dead.

This behavior exists in other fanbases but it is really present in the hololive fanbase.

It's mostly not realizing that what they love is not the girls, but rather they love the "world" hololive is presenting them. They may have a favorite girl, but most importantly they love the illusion of cute idols, all being friends with each other, having fun in a nice and friendly company.

If it helps, it's best to split them, because the Niji JP fanbase isn't actually that unified.
They are more individual liver fans who will follow them out and not care that much what other livers are doing.
On the other hand, you have NIJISANJI FANS who might not have come to be fans from 1 particular streamer, but promote unity, even where the livers themselves don't do it much. As you might see, it's actually more in contrast and in opposition to what were perceived as traits from Hololive fans.

back before EN, when the fanbases were small, this group is what put a stain on Nijisanji's image in the west. Always making it about how much better Nijisanji is than other groups, more freedom, better streamers, clips, etc. instead of enjoying content. Ofc they wouldn't push anything bad, but be annoying about anything remotely good done, even if they weren't there to see it.
I still see a lot of people that do this from the "niji fandom", outside this board that is. I don't take anything posted here seriously.

Part of it is the fact that neither had strong collabs so far (well, Rushia is still settling things and haven't streamed on Youtube at all since then) - being in corp provides both positives and negatives, and stronger marketing / more packed collabs with big vtubers is one of those positives. On the other hand, both can do whatever they want and collab with whoever they want without being restricted by their corp (poor Shuba legit wanted to do collabs outside of Hololive, but it's no longer possible, at least outside of music stuff? correct me if I'm wrong).
I will miss all collabs Coco and Rushia had, but for now I'll just support Kson and Mike and watch if they'll be able to reach the point where their content is as good as it was during Hololive times. Same applies to any other potential graduated Hololive vtuber I watch and enjoy.
