A word's meaning (at least outside of academia) isn't decided by a definiton but by common usage and consensus, it's bound to evolve with time and fighting that process is retarded. By now 'roguelike' only cares about procgen and permadeath outside of the most autistic groups whose pet definitions will die with them. Oh fuck, this shit is such a mess. I love roguelikes, but everyone just uses the term now to mean "randomized content with permadeath". The term literally means "like Rogue". It's like calling Borderlands a diablo-style game because it has randomized loot based on prefix/suffix system. Reminds me I gotta get back into playing nethack again, I never did beat that. And I wonder how Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup's development is doing. Though the whole subgenre has stagnated, so not surprised no one uses the term properly anymore.
