Theyre really lonely. For whatever reason they hardly have any contact with women, people in general for that matter, so even the merest hint of attention is a big deal. If just a small positive interaction with a girl/woman makes you feel butterflies, that's why. You're so ignored that even someone acknowledging your presence """means""" there's something more behind it; your brain translates it as that girl liking you (because why would they even say hello if that weren't the case?)

Enter streamers/camwhores, etc. The lonely man spends hours of their time watching those women. He "learns" her likes, dislikes, interests, plus (especially for vtubers) you have this safe, inoffensive person on the other end. They aren't a scary, strange real woman, they're an anime gril, just like in your favorite oktaubait animu or visual novel. Not only that, they like the same things you do! You also get to see they can be goofy, like to joke around, have fun, all of those things the women in your daily life aren't.

You have the development of this parasocial relationship from that and you ALSO have the fact that they will give you attention if you give them money. Doesn't matter if they're a lusty camwhore or a 'pure' vtuber, you give them money and they will show varying levels of attention, especially if you become a familiar. It could be a "thanks for the supa!" Or something else, doesn't really matter. Either way, it's attention you don't get in your daily life so even the tiniest bit really just makes you that much more attached to whatever streamer you really like and that only grows more and more the longer you stay watching them and the more donations/supas/amazon gifts you give to them.

On the one hand, it's really sad, I can heavily empathize with someone in that state of mind because I've been that lonely (it's not fun). On the other, it is well known that streamers of whatever stripe are first and foremost entertainers who are playing a character, and also if they weren't tossing money at one streamer it'd be at another or something else like booze or drugs because they're essentially "self-medicating" that crushing sense of loneliness.

If anything, I hate that society is such that we have so many men like that. They are manifestations of greater underlying issues we're dealing with, and I think it'll just get worse with time.

Not the dude you're replying to, but I went through a similar isolated phase and know other people that did and I'm going to come out and say that "lol just go outside" is unironically the only way out. That really is how these things get fixed, but usually requires something to happen to force them to do so. For some people, it's something like an IRL gaming group or other form of social interaction within their comfort zone. In my case, it was getting a job and needing to interact with real people in a professional environment. In the case of one of my friends, it was their parents making them go back to school. But something does need to happen to force you to start interacting with people.

It's not like change can't come about in someones house, but hitting the gym would most likely be a faster and easier catalyst towards the positive social change that people seek (i know that its something that helped me with socialising, at least).
And if it doesn't, it's imperative that the person tries something else, instead of giving up. Not everything is for everyone, half the battle is finding what galvanizes you to move forward.

In a broader cultural aspect though, the answer isn't clear. Im a bit of a traditionalist so I think that taking up responsibility, learning to be dependable and having a family are the best cures for that, however that isn't really something the state or culture itself can promote properly anymore. We are left to our own devices.

So, As far as a possible solution out of the mess for them. I'll just come out and say I empathize with them so much because I was in a similar low point back in highschool and half of college. How I got out of that was a slow process but >>268690 and >>270221 really do hit the nail on the head so to speak. The initial catalyst was essentially an epiphany I had after a night browsing /r9k/ seeing a lot of the people there and realizing I did not want to be 25, 30, 35, w/e living like I was: a shut-in utterly alone living in an a home as disheveled and chaotic as my mind and room were, you know those horrifyingly dirty rooms with cans, trash, and other garbage everywhere? That was my room then.

Parents weren't really there so any positive change was up to me. Gradually, very gradually I tried to put myself out of my comfort zone in different ways; getting myself up to the point of even being able to call someone on the phone, starting to work out so I could stop being morbidly obese, trying to work at social skills (I unironically am autistic, diagnosed and everything lol), heck even getting to the point where I could talk engage in the bantz with other randos in online servers (I couldn't even do that at the very start I was that far behind).

I tried to read up on all sorts of things re: social skills, fitness, etc. After a slip back downard in uni I gathered up the nerve to contact their uni's health dept to set up appointments with their therapist (started using antidepressants at the time too. They _were_ a help at that time but I got to a point where I didn't need them once I got out of college YMMV and honestly now I'd tell someone to use those in a last-resort sort of situation but I'm not a doc, so this isn't med advice). Read up on things in places like The Red Pill too; ftr I disagree with their motivations but their is good info there especially if you're a sperg still trying to learn how2human. Remember this was all over the course of years.


For me to start taking the steps to effect change required me to be at that really low point and for me to have enough introspection. Probably no different in that regard than the archetypal addict who doesn't turn his life around till he hits rock-bottom.

However, with my initial post I was thinking more the large-scale things. On a population wide level certain things line-up to make conditions such that people like myself or the ones donating too much money to streamers appear. I think >>271058 is right on the mark as far as mentally ill goes. Many of these men probably have some sort of condition that makes socializing/fitting in to society/connecting with women, let alone anyone difficult. I am autistic so just getting to a basic level of social skill was incredibly difficult. (however, social skills *are* skills, unintuitive doesn't mean unlearnable). I'd bet quite a few of the men at issue here are the same, given the known affinity autists have for anime and the similarity these chuubas have to our anime waifus. There of course other conditions that will lead to men having difficulty connecting to others.

Their families are a larger factor though imho. So much goes back to the family. The psychologist Dr. Warren Farrell wrote a lot about this in The Boy Crisis (highly recommend you give it a look) and you can find plenty of vids with him talking about that on youtube. But in very brief summary, there are incredibly strong correlations between mens' families and their odds of achieving financial and academic success, odds of falling into drug and alcohol abuse, sex or porn addiction, odds of romantic success (marriage/partner, finding gfs, etc), odds of developing a mental illness (which ties into the previous paragrah). All of those tie into the family they grew up in and their childhood. I myself grew up in a broken home with a parent that was emotionally neglectful and abusive. There is absolutely no doubt that was a major contributing factor into my own situation. No father figure to be a guide, no mom/dad around so I could SEE how men and women interacted in positive ways (modeling is key, especially for things like social skills, which lack of ties into loneliness). Look on /r9k/, look on the comments on Jordan Peterson vids and see how many men have similar backgrounds. So, you have these men growing up in a way with families that are essentially setting them up for failure when it comes to being able to create good relationships with women (let alone anyone really). 1/2

As far as fixes on this large scale, I think it would require a realization in the popular consciousness that many many boys (who obviously grow up into men) are being set-up for failure because of their families or—more specifically—the lack thereof. It would also require a cultural/governmental policy shift to encourage the development of stable long-lasting families that enable children to grow up without any dysfunctions or neuroses. This is doubly important because this is a self-reinforcing cycle. Looking at men, the ones growing up in messed up households statistically grow up to have messed up households of their if they go on to marry and have children. We can see the damage to a large extent in the families of black-americans and it's really now starting to hit the other population groups in the US and it's looking to only get worse. Anyway, facilitate the creation of stable family units, more resources/community focus on reaching out to the adult men who were 'left behind', some way for them to obtain therapy, or hell even some sort of social club/group to facilitate the development of friendships (these sorts of things have declined a lot over the past half-century).

As to how those changes would come about or how some could be implemented at that level, I don't know. As it is, men are left to their own devices to figure it out themselves as >>270221 says. There is obviously at some level a recognition in many men that they are in bad shape and need to do something to help redirect themselves, Jordan Peterson and others like him wouldn't have struck a chord with millions were that not the case. Either way, encourage cultural/policy changes like that and you'll help the family unit and thus lessen the number of men that wind up alone throwing money at 2.5d anime grils so they can get the tiny drops of attention and positivity thrown their way.

Disclaimer that my thinking is heavily influenced by how I grew up and not wanting that for others so I think I may probably align with >>270221's take. Sorry for the delay, typing this up took a bit.
