Let me tell you about the biggest pump-n-dump in the the whole history of /vt/. Well strictly speaking it did not take place in /vt/ as this story actually began in the hololive global thread on /jp/ before /vt/ was even created. After a big gura stream someone linked to this very small Japanese indie vtuber who was singing live at that time. Hundreds of people suddenly bursted into her stream out of nowhere, taking her from a 2 view to a 100-something view. But people also started making content, art and making memes. One of them is topsis which resulted from her trying to speak english the best she could and accidentally saying top sister instead of big sister. But this short time of fame did not last for long and eventually people started to trickle out, but the death blow was when a stalker started annoying her. You may think it was a viewer but it was actually someone living in her housing complex, stealing her dirty clothes and stalking her whenever she left the house. This lead to her having to stop streaming for a month as she had to desperately and immediately move house to a new safe location. But when she started streaming nearly none of the newly gained foreign viewers showed up. She got desperate and started a “singing until x subs” stream in the hope that people would join again. She sang for hours and hours but when 14 hours passed she broke down crying as nearly no one subscribed and nearly no one even showed up. She deleted that stream but she still went on, still making streams but now for the minuscule Japanese audience she had all around. She still makes streams where she sings live music with acoustic guitar around 2-5 times a week, you may still see the occasional 1-2 foreign viewers who stuck around but that’s it. The biggest pump-n-dump in /vt/ history. Her channel name is 真白ユキ*JPN Vtuber but she can also be called simply yuki or topsis as she once was known.

Being an indie is so much worse. If you manage to get people watching you but not chatting, its the same feeling as being on stage with an audience that doesn't do anything.
They aren't booing or heckling, but at the same time nothing is more damning because you never know what you are doing wrong. If they boo or heckle at least you can intearct with them and can see they are paying attention. It's a terrible isolating feeling that...

Viewers come and go, and I'm sure she knows full well that only a percentage of those in a big crowd like that would stick around.
And yeah that was never a big factor. Back when I watched her more consistently there were plenty of english speakers in chat but nowhere near the thousand viewers you speak of. That's why I say it's the streaming hours that made the difference. The few times I do catch a stream live there's not the same level of participation.

I still watch her streams whenever I catch her live, which is not very often because she usually goes live very early for me. I love her voice and laugh. I wish I could hear Yuki laugh in the same way she laughed the stream after the 'raid' when she began welcoming people by name one after the other and they wouldn't stop coming.

Indies should really stream for the pleasure of streaming itself. The streamer market is so overcrowded in 2022 that if they knew the statistical odds of having any success as a newcomer, they wouldn't even worry about growth. I agree it sucks to get pump-and-dumped though
