Gura didn't actually pick up steam until a few weeks after debut, on debut she was actually considered kind of meh and a disappointment her first week-ish.

Even when she started to build hype with her first Muse Dash stream that was like.. 40k ish? Other JPs were still doing similar or better to her at the time, she didn't actually sweep the scene until her first karaoke which was like 2 weeks in. And, she never achieved numbers anywhere near like that EVER again outside of new outfits FYI. Salome is "debut to like 100k, hold 100k for no reason every stream even though nothing super crazy is happening" and that's definitely not a normal pattern.

She was consistently pulling >40k ccv the first few weeks on every single stream and 40k was the stuff of legendary streams at that point, closest competition was consistently at ~25k. Gura wouldn't acknowledge sub milestones because she was so far ahead of everybody from the start. Her karaoke was the biggest solo stream period for a while, only surpassed by big Hololive costume reveals and Lulu graduation pooling together all the corpo viewers. It wasn't "picking up steam", it was sealing the deal.
Salome is a huge meme in Japan currently due to the circumstances of her debut. Everybody who watches vtubers watches her just to be in the moment and then some normalfags who don't even normally watch vtubers tune in too. It helps that she doesn't stream for 8 hours every day and doesn't collab. Might as well be an old school vtuber with slightly longer form videos going viral. This exposure is not going to translate into streaming popularity in the long run but atm she is numba wan and muh bots is cope.

Most vtubers, even the ones considered particularly creative and productive, have been sort of going with the flow for the longest time. Showing up as scheduled, playing the scheduled game, filling up dead air and getting the occasional clippable quip or a funny moment etc. but not really pushing to make a show of it. Just spending the time. It's what always ends up happening with streamers.
Salome's brand new, and her content plays out like a packed collection of choice moments. It's very dense and fresh. Older vtubers look at her and basically go, "oh, that's the energy I used to have and then lost". No doubt even Salome is going to mellow down eventually, but right now she's making the most of her time in the spotlight AND inspiring others to try harder again. Everyone's winning right now.
