The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Do you guys think having a "theme" is necessary to be a good chuuba?
Like if i want to be a retro focused gamer or play only Doom and boomer shooters... is that a good idea? i'm afraid that this would limit me to basically never play a FOTM game which might suck or just make my streams not as enjoyable or at least repetitive

I think you should never worry about what you SHOULD play, and backing yourself into a corner is dangerous.
That being said, most of my favorite chuubas have something special about them that they capitalize on.
I like oldschool shooters. I have no clue if they make good streams, but I like them. I actually have a hard time thinking of anyone that focuses on arcade shooters.

I miss forums bros... anyways, if you stream the new hot game what makes you think someone would pick you to watch over all the other more popular chuubas that are also playing it right now? I think if you don't have an established audience you should try to carve a niche for yourself that might be less populated and in which you can probably have a little more fun with.

Anecdotal evidence: The more popular the game is i stream the less people watch me.

As far as games go, not particularly but try to stay in a general area when trying to attract an audience. What matters more as a theme is your brand cohesiveness rather than your content, since your content cancalways change but your identity won't (assuming rebranding would be out of reach financially). You don't have to be incredibly unique, but try to twist content already being done in your own way to make people have a reason to check you out

It's always good to have a niche or theme even if it's not 100% of your content. It adds structure to your content so people know what to expect even if it's a broad category like retro games. The issue with some categories though is that their interested viewer pool is small, and then you have to take into consideration how much of that pool wants to watch a Vtuber.

if you're completely inexperienced in whatever genre you're trying to get into and make your primary content....just why? If I'm new to chess, why go in and make my full content chess? Most people who have specialized niche content are putting interests or hobbies that they enjoy and are familiar with on display and turning that into streamed content. Maroony with Retro games, Asmongold with MMORPGs, etc. what if you don't like it, then what?

Iron Mouse and Zentreya started with free models. If you considering too "founder", Hampwned has 100 viewers and drew their own little doodle-tier model. Creators like Overzeggs, Kaori, Girl_DM, and plenty of other vtubers out there who grew using a Vroid or something fairly cheap (definitely not in the thousands) before moving towards something more expensive. Not to mention that in the end you are nothing more than a streamer with an anime picture on your screen, your content still matters in the end and the avatar is just a waste to "specialize" your content and target a specific niche.

If people can make it as a normal streamer with or without a webcam, people can make it as Vtubers. Not saying that perceived quality of your model, design, or whatever has nothing to do with your potential for early growth, but there's plenty of people out there who have spent insane amounts of money only to not have as many viewers as some people with Vroids or significantly cheaper and lower quality models.

When I was still starting out, I commissioned a design that I was super excited about but quickly lost interest in it as it was a nice design but not something I considered represented me or my personality very well. I dunno, I'd say even being unattractive isn't that bad if it's stylized right. Krimbo's character is pretty conventionally unattractive, as is Peony's, Kabhaal's, Papi, Redclaw, etc. While they're not "attractive" characters, they aren't just completely offputting the way that the skinless horse dude is and some of them look pretty cool.

People need to think about who are they trying to target with their content and build their character after that. Krimbo and Kabhaal are both very much playing an overexaggerated character which allows them to get away with their conventionally unattractive designs, because the people watching their content doesn't care about attractiveness anyways.
For streamers that don't want, or have the skill to do that, a typical pretty anime character is going to do you a solid in terms of getting people to look at your content. You don't have to do BFE or fujobait either, just being attractive gets you more clicks than someone who isn't. The idea that you NEED to do these things because you have an attractive character is insane.

I personally tend to roughly throw it onto existing lineart or a sketch, make the background transparent, and then see how I feel as I tweak shades. Sometimes something will look great in my head and mesh nicely on the palette but look wrong in practice, it's easier to catch it early.

I am honestly genuinely awful at streaming video games. I like playing them in my own time, but I have to put all my focus into them to be able to function at all. I love zatsu, but I also feel you have to have a viewerbase to start off with to pull of those streams. So, I think while I am building up to 80% zatsudan I will focus on arts and crafting, which I am okay at until I have enough of a viewer base for infinite chatting. I love chatting. I think this is a solid plan.

Jaydead's model art looks better than Azu's model art too, and has bonus points because he drew and rigged it himself, unlike a certain someone who got everything handed to him. Deku paid $600 for a reference sheet, a PNG, and commercial rights. I hate the idea of people having an absolute dead chat so I stick around and try to get a conversation or topic out of some streamers.
To be quite honest a lot of the aspies here just dont have a fast enough chat to have a proper back and forth and when they do they are really interesting and cool fun.

I think a really basic graphic design class would be good for most /asp/ies, but even after that some can afford to do really weird design shit based on their theme. For that muppet, I just want to grab a bunch of 60s-80s album set and Henson materials and make a moodboard. Maybe some drugs first.

yeah i think thats one of the issues is that a lot of aspies just dont know how to start talking when the chat is dead, which i think is a massive problem with streaming as a 2 view and its dumb as fuck to encourage stream reps to people with slow to dead chats when realistically they aren't getting a whole lot of interaction. theres a few aspies i had a great time chatting with and getting them to tangent about stuff. we always praise dog's social charisma but the dude has a constantly moving chat, a few aspies would absolutely pop off with that chat activity

Even when he didn't have a constantly moving chat he kept talking though, that's what we're praising. He didn't always have 20-30 or above viewers. I've been following him since he initially posted and he would sometimes have 3-5 viewers and a stagnant chat, like many /asp/ies. I'm sure plenty of /asp/ies would thrive with an active chat but it's about who can thrive on their own without it.

Yeah, it's really hard to keep me interested if you don't know how to talk to begin with but as long as you can hold a convo or just talk about what you're playing, even if I don't know anything about it, I'd gladly listen to you. Granted there's not much you can talk about while playing a jrpg game, especially one as story intensive as octopath traveler. His league stream was fun for me though so I can't really say anything about that. I'll say his demeanor and streams are much more fun to take part in than most /asp/ies though, even if it's hardly engaging.
