Well, it's a matter off perspective. Can you be too new to be part of the trend? Is it living "off" it because you would not (want to) make it as a flesh streamer? Where is the line between genuinely being part of the community and "leeching" off it?
Most of these things will be decided among vtubers who (do not) want you to interact with them. There are obvious shams but I don't think the idol paradigm is what makes anyone rightfully successful. Hololive and Nijisanji live off subversion of the idol standard (and I don't mean subversion in a good or bad way, I don't have a strong opinion on it) and it works out great most of the time.

Corps guarantee a certain level of professionalism but it's not like they'd a role model of professionalism.

Nijien acts like trailer trash. Holoen rarely streams. Neither are ideal. Same on the JP side you get a wide variety of professionalism such as Matsuri being a complete dumpster fire.

The best is just finding a good reliable indie. Art chuubas are usually reliable because they already have consistency and hard work engrained from years of learning to draw. But it doesn't guarantee they're of quality personality, like what happened with the frog.

In a way yes because they are contracted to be professional entertainers. They are providing a service to the viewers, they are not carving out a place for themselves to exist and get paid to exist. Largely the indie scene has a lot of moments that remind me of an old chatroom story kind of like the robe and wizard hat story.
