Is idol culture just a relative inceloid subculture of Virtual YouTubing? Why are a small minority of losers pretending that it's the dominant mindset to have within the fandom when tens of thousands of indies like pic-related take on the role as simply a Virtual YouTuber as it has existed since the 90s with Homestar Runner and Strong Bad? Do they realize that outside corporations that sell mass produced idolshit that the industry is at its heart, just simply being a virtual streamer for the greater public they appeal to? The industry has existed for much longer than the late 2010s, contrary to what weebs tell you. I think this is a good thread where we have a broader discussion of what Virtual YouTubing actually is independent of what idolshit consoomers tell you it is.

There are very few idol vtubing agencies but people act like they're the only thing around, one of them happens to be very popular. Plenty of options for everyone. This bothers me even though I am a holofag. I don't get the bull's eye on idol culture when an absolute tiny fraction of vtubers do anything related to idols. There's like only 34 members of HoloJP and more than 15k vtubers(according to vnuma before it went down)

The thing is though initially it wasn't about streaming, it was a virtual personality which was inherently more along the lines of playing an anime character. That inherently lent itself to "idol culture" since anime characters are typically idealized and pure.
Hololive mixed that with a more natural personality with varied results and levels normalfaggotry. But they were still more focused on the idealized anime character type thing with the normal side being more a prompt for their anime side.

Nijisanji just pushed the generic e-thot streamer side who gave no shit about the anime side of the medium.

If all it takes for you to be a vtuber is having an anime avatar, then that will be a very boring and bleak future of the medium of vtubing. Anyone can buy an avatar, it just takes money. Provide a setting, provide history. Not shit lore, but actual events that shaped your character's personality. Tie your character to those of your gen-mates to produce conflict and growth through shared experience.

This is the main point for me too. When I really got into vtubing with myth I got into vshojo at the same time. I liked nyanners more than all of holo at the start. Why I started slowly drifting to holo was because of all the stupid Twitter shit. I do not care about 95% or vshojo Twitter.
