What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

There is actually content from my past, but i used a different name until like a year ago? It's mostly contained within my old youtube channel which has like random gameplay videos (ffxiv, pso2, wow etc). If you find that one, then well too bad i guess. I found the most absurd-looking vtuber I’ve ever seen on twitter the other day and I’d like to share it with you guys, but I don’t want to be a full-on cyberbully so I’m not gonna link it or anything. I’ll just describe what I saw.
He didn’t have any skin. Just exposed musculature. From the waist up, he was human. From the waist down he was a horse, but not in the way you would expect a centaur to look. His torso was just attached to an entire horse in roughly the spot where a saddle would sit.
The human half of his body was, aside from the absence of skin, a normal-looking anime boy. He wore a headset and a blue hoodie. He had a chest pocket with a pocket watch in it and had his hands in the hoodie’s pockets.
The horse also had no skin and its head was a completely exposed skull with one large eye. The horse was wearing green coveralls with a few pouches on them. It had a mark on the butt of the coveralls of a D20 attached to a shackle. I think the same emblem was on the guy’s hoodie.
Weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Thanks for reading.

It's not just about the money, plenty of people have had money but can't entertain or grow an audience. They end up with 20 viewers which is nice but they also end up with an investment they will likely never make back with those 20 viewers.

Honestly I don't think I personally know how to "quantify" the odds of someone's success as far as people who have done heavy pre-debuts, but it tends to lend towards people who either have had previous content creation experience or are just conscious about being charismatic, entertaining, and have done the research.

One trend I've noticed is with a lot of them they've been watching streamers for a while and know the basic in-and-outs because they've watched people grow outside of the Vtuber bubble. A lot of Vtubers and Vtuber viewers in general never bothered with streamers until a year or two ago so they've got a massive handicap and lack the basic knowledge of what it takes to be a streamer.

It depends on the person. For most, just start streaming as soon as reasonably possible and do a big debut event later if you see growth. Grow as you stream. very few people have the resources, skills, knowledge, mindset, and drive to do a full pre-debut campaign and just start off with a sprint from there. I can commission 20,000 dollar setup, but if the only thing I do until I debut is a few tweets here and there with no prior knowledge of streaming or content creation, then as soon as I debut it'll be painfully apparent I've got no clue what I'm doing.

I think this is still true, though it obviously doesn't and can't reflect in their content. There's a lot of posts here that talk about how they'd never want X type of person in their audience, or they'd hate it if they had X as a viewer. They want an audience that's just a bunch of carbon copies of themselves because that's the only type of person they know how to entertain or they're worried someone will make an unfunny meme about them which would surely cause the streamer a massive mental breakdown.

My opinion probably doesn't matter on this that much, but i'm on nightshift and i'm bored so you get a textwall.

This goes back to the whole thing of what you are streaming for. I have gotten critisized for saying i want to stream for attention and people said that i appeared fake to them which i didn't understand. I believed that was the whole point of streaming to begin with. But i tried being as honest as i can. I love talking and i love having conversations. I love hearing people's opinions and interacting with them, no matter how unsavory they might be. I might not hang around on some of the more spicier boards (or any boards really), but that's just because i don't think a lot of people understand what's the value of being crass or taboo and it ends up being tiring to read.

I don't do well being put on the spot. I like to have at least a moment to prepare. If someone came into my chat, said something lewd or mean I would get flustered. But i also think that is a valuable learning experience. I believe it to my own weakness and i want to take it as an opportunity to learn. I want an interaction i remember, positive or negative. I don't have a lot of hobbies as most things bore me, but people are interesting. The fact that people come into my stream voluntarily is a concept i find absolutely insane. I watch my vods and i know this is exactly the type of stuff i'd click off in 2 seconds. I have no idea what i would find entertaining.

I don't care about the memes, i don't care what group a person belongs to or in what box they are shoved into. I don't care about having people on my stream that love me or hate me or even people that understand me. If you come up to me and you want to say something, ask me something or just interact, then i'm interested. I'm fully prepared that it might not work out, that i have to ban you because you said bad words in my chat, that you end up thinking i'm boring and leave or that i just end up not feeling comfortable talking to you. And that is fine, you don't have to get along with everyone.

I don't care about being a babi or a vtuber or playing a specific game i like or posting myself on 4chan. I don't care about money or numbers either. Ultimately it's an attempt to cure my lonliness by putting myself out there and just creating interactions with other people. There might be better ways to do this, but this is the only way i can manage right now.

This probably doesn't really matter to anyone but me and might not even make sense, but I made sure to make this post as long as possible so it's easy to skip. I'm also aware of how pseudo-intellectual and pretentious it sounds. I don't consider myself a smart person.

I thought I could maybe get an interview based on my talents alone, but I might just be in over my head. Pretty sure I was rejected because I never started any sort of social media presence or anything and don't have a proven track record or following, most of what I do is offline. I believe I'd be an entertaining streamer, but the thing is I don't think there's anything extraordinary enough about me to get people interested in me in the first place. I'm talking about really being like a top level player at something to set me apart. My main focus is singing, it's what I know I'm excellent at, but that's not really something I can use to draw in viewers. Streaming is so goddamn oversaturated right now, I don't want to give up on getting into a corpo but it just feels like I was way too late in the game

welcome tourist, every one of us goes through this at some point where we go in /asp/ with high hopes of corpo dreams then you find out every single niji or holo corpo has been doing this shit for years and has large numbers one way or another, unless they had nepotism buff

its not neccesarily too late, but you have to be willing to start making shit from scratch and earnestly commit a lot of effort in content creation. irys did covers for 10 fucking years, kiara was stranded in japan and had to borderline whore herself out for 10 years, thats the type of dedication it takes

objectively it is too late if "corpo" to that anon means either Hololive or Nijisanji. Okay I'm done streaming so I can give this peice of advice. Dump the ultrawide desu. I've had a 2k ultrawide and it's horrible. Because no games really support it well, and the ones that do make it hard to stream. So for example you stream in 16:9 but play in 21:9. That's a huge issue. If you're trying to split it in half you're going to be off center and run into some pretty weird issues. But of course that's my opinion.

>> No.22591416

>>22589694
I don't know why people make these things seem like the end of the world.

Yes, they're not great but the alternative is to struggle and stagnate as an indie while bumping into setbacks and going through the struggle of finding out what works, learning the hard way, spending lots of your own money, and overall grinding significantly harder. I'm not interested in the corpo thing because I don't think I'd be a great fit to begin with, but if I was more interested in going the traditional route, I don't think "Uhhhh the company isn't super professional" would stop me from going in to get a free model, assets, support, etc.

>>22590449
This is how a lot of people want to do it but underestimate how hard it is to "just start" and all the hurdles you have to go through to grow. On paper is all seems super easy, "just do this, that, network, stream, reps, etc" but content creation with the intention to grow, as in REALLY grow into a large, lasting channel even if it's just for a few years requires a lot of knowledge most new people won't have for ages. Even small corpos can help you circumvent a lot of that if you actually have the other marketable skills but just lack the knowledge of how to get people to look at you. I can't really imagine the downsides that these companies have had really outweighs all that support, even if the support itself is lacking

I don't even know what the point is with Cadence, from what I can tell it has no substance whatesover and just sounds spooky to whoever is reading it. Half of 4chan is her personality? What? Can you be more specific about what you mean?

Cadence doesn't get viewers because she's a bad streamer and her star dew gameplay is boring. But even then without 4chan she'd probably be getting even less.

I'm really curious what the ratio is between people who are just fucking around and people who are trying to "make it." I think the former is far more healthy than the latter. It's good to do this as a hobby, but you shouldn't pin everything on it, else you'll lose your fucking marbles. The people who are doing this solely for their own enjoyment will take much, much longer to reach burnout than the people who are actually trying to make a career out of this. And you know what else? When people are doing this purely for fun, that shines through in their streams. You can tell they're enjoying it and that they're not just repping for the sake of repping, and this is infectious- it keeps the viewers coming back. Since some retards like to treat this entire thing like some kind of crypto ponzi scheme, let's talk probabilities. Say there are 10000 people trying to "make it" as a vtuber, and that only 500 of these people actually are afforded the opportunity to make it (likely more than enough to cover the major corpos). With these super generous numbers, you're afforded a 5% chance of making it, and those odds really aren't great. Stop being a fucking retard, you probably won't make it. When you stream, stream knowing "hey, I'm not going to make it, but I'm going to have fun anyways." The best words to ever come out of this thread were "stay grounded, stay hopeful." However, I'd argue that you should place far more emphasis on being grounded.

the secret to getting through Nijisanji auditions was to fill in the written parts of your application with 4+ paragraphs. if you wrote less than that, you were auto filtered. you'd only this if you had already gotten in. you're talking about nepotism as if pomu and elira were standing behind the company personally hand selecting who got in. it's not that nefarious.

pomu and elira just needed to tell their friends
>anykara is looking for people who can show enthusiasm so just write a lot of paragraphs in the written text portion so you don't get skipped over

First time checking out these threads and it's kinda funny seeing the channels on here. Surprised a good majority of people here are like under 100 followers or not even affiliated.
Though my question is what's the best way of harassing people I got my Twitter suspended and I'm blacklisted from participating in vtuber collabs with twitter people for making fun of men who use female avatars cause the voice is hella off putting and fat black SJW female vtubers aswell, and especially harassing faggot furries.
How do I now go on with being blacklisted when I no longer have any ammo without getting my twitch/YouTube suspended

How easy is it to sell a fully rigged model? What about for what you initially paid for it? My kid is very interested in getting into vtubing, and I don't mind splurging for her model if it would be relatively easy to get the money back if she gets bored or whatever

>> No.22604847

>>22604787
>How easy is it to sell a fully rigged model?
90% of that depends on how attractive it looks. most chuubas don't even know what to pay attention to when checking a model's rigging and they only look at the art style.

>> No.22605044

>>22604787
W parent
I think it's more difficult than you might expect though, since the model will have had an identity of it's own (your daughter's) beforehand, people might not want to buy it since VTubing is a hobby where people like to have their own unique characters. With this being said, if the art is nice, it'll sell regardless. The max you could expect back out of all of the investments you put in though is likely 70% (this includes the rigged model, any potential overlays, artwork, etc.)

>> No.22605393

>>22604847
You also need the artist's permission to resell.

Why is there a market for premade models to begin with then? Not asking in a smart ass way, asking seriously. Is that strictly for unused models?
>70% (this includes the rigged model, any potential overlays, artwork, etc.)
I'm only going to front the money for the model, something she couldn't realistically get on her own any time soon. Other stuff like overlays she can save up and commission on her own hopefully

Sorry if it was a weird question, as a parent you just never know what to invest in or not for your kids and you would ideally not want to just flush money down the shitter

>> No.22605974

>>22605659
The pre-made ones are usually $30-$50, and are customizable as well. Assuming that you'll be splurging, I'm going to assume $1000 for the model and $1000 for the rig, which is a lot heavier price to pay for a model that 1) isn't going to be the buyer's own and 2) has a previous presence already, without the same customization options. And it's not weird at all, you're an awesome parent, keep it up.

>Why is there a market for premade models
As someone who went with this route, some premade models just click with people, especially if it has a safe and popular design. For me, I had a full document with designs I would like, but then I stumbled upon an artist selling a l2d ready-to-rig model, and it's basically everything I wanted. Mind you, mine is an exclusive one so I have the full rights. It's also cheaper than designing one from scratch too.

if she likes it, get her one of the shibafs premades in nizima/booth. it's safe, pretty good quality; the only caveat is that it's something that's popular and commonly used, but if she wants to dip her toes into it, it's not too much of a loss considering it's only $15.

We should pin shibaf in the op so new aspies can have a good place to start.
Lots of model talks in the last few threads so there should be a generally agreed option for new/poor aspies trying to dip their toes in.
