I haven't, but I did read The Dragon Never Sleeps, which I thought was conceptually cool but probably should have been split in two, and the first three of the Garret Files, which are probably his most "typical" books. I'd say the biggest mistake is removing scenes that establish Frodo as a intelligent and courageous adventurer (meeting with Gildor, being trappedn in the barrow, fighting off the Witch-king to the point that the Morgul-blade misses Frodo's heart and the Witch-king is later wary of attacking again). The first description could be metaphorical but there's no confusing the last paragraph for being anything besides 'the Balrog stands up straight and spreads its wings'. Like, what's even the argument against this? At best you could say that Balrogs are fallen Maiar and Maiar are never SPECIFICALLY said to have wings in their true angelic forms, but even if we assume this it's meaningless because the corrupted Maiar clearly didn't keep any sort of physiological continuity after they were twisted by Morgoth, or they wouldn't have turned into giant fire demons.
