What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

I feel bad about what I am about to say, but I think it could help you a lot.
You have fallen down a polish pitfall.
The issues that you are trying to fix stem from mileage, not from craftsmanship.
In reality, the lines you've got on your current work are more clean and precise than almost every vtuber model you would see out there. Pic related. Every line is freehand, it's just drawn small enough and anything too messy gets patched a bit.

This is impressive for someone with little drawing background, but, this is probably way past the point of diminishing returns.

Thank you for taking it lightly.
To be honest, I recommend either to finish it quickly and just enjoy it as it is (you can improve your artistic skills a little by little over time if you are passionate about art) or eventually get a full blown artist once your channel picks up.
I mean that your lines are way too clean. A lot of design elements you've got are trying to be too clean and end up rounding up important edges and bits.
A lot of beginner artists tend to think Japanese style art is cleaner than it really is.
All in all, I think you should finish the model and start streaming soon. If you know you have this issue, make it your goal to break it down and not let it be your boss.

All in all it just boils down to art side i need practice but if my goal is streaming i shouldn't let my own perfectionism and procrastination stop me

You don't have to be so hard on yourself.
It is a relatively common issue with new artists that they try to be too clean and thinking extra polish is the solution.
I also assume that you are afraid of the medium. A common thing with beginners who want to be really good at anything is doing everything but the actual thing. Don't end up making that mistake, give yourself deadlines and be disciplined about how much you do the sideline things rather than the real thing.
You saw how someone recognized your work already.

I would also like to remind you that there is no shame in not being fully self sufficient. Getting art done by someone else, music, assets, rig, or anything, would be absolutely fine.

It seems like the problem is that certain steps you are losing yourself in a mess.
For example, at 6 seconds, the face and sketch you've got are perfect for a rough, from here on all you really need is to clean them up properly.
In some places it is very clear you are scared of messing up, in others you seem to want to rush certain things.
Maybe try using relatively thin lines that don't have much pressure sensitivity. Using a digital brush like a felt tip pen is not very comfortable in my experience.

My current schedule is a mess so I made a new one! I really liked that i was able to be productive. I managed to get a really good start to a new schedule design and also helped to pick out some of the accents that i will be able to use in other elements down the road. picrel is what i got so far, it's far from finished but it's a good first step.

I also talked a lot about how to approach art and design, despite not being an artist myself i still know a thing or two about color theory and how to make an appealing design, by just observing the stuff. I almost spent an entire hour googling designs on stream and showing off some examples where you would find cool designs for both UI elements and characters.

I also colored in my sketch for the new model, because the artist asked for some color reference so what better way than to showcase some of the easy ways to do coloring in photoshop in a quick and dirty way that looks way better than it has any right to be. Again i'm not an artist i just cheat my way through with Photoshop.

I really enjoyed the stream today and maybe i even had one advice or another that might even have helped a viewer. If you want to listen to someone ramble about design and dick around in photoshop for 4 hours, i definitely got you covered. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1453142372 (It's currently still uploading to my youtube, so you'll have to deal with this.

I wouldn't recommend it if you've never streamed a day in your life before. Streaming is a lot harder than it looks, and it's definitely not for everyone. At the very least, get a few weeks or months of streams in and then rewatch your VODs to analyze your skills. Be very honest with yourself, and get second opinions. If you're satisfied that maybe you have the potential to make a real hobby out of it, that's when you drop the money for a model. No sense in getting those nice assets and then realizing that you hate streaming, or don't want to put in the work to get some returns from it.
But fuck, if you're okay with that, then I guess there's no harm? Maybe you could get the rights to resell it from the artist so it isn't a complete financial loss.
>>22282656
Eventually, but it's still very new to the EN audience. We're still at least a year away from Luxiem's success trickling down to the smaller agencies.
>>22282686
Some personalities handle it better than others. If you mean inter-agency jealousy, there isn't too much of that. Every small agency has one girl that's crushing the rest. Eventually those gains will trickle down to the agency as a whole. The more reputable the agency looks, the more opportunities everyone gets. And you also have that great resource right there to help you figure out how to improve your content and grow your audience. That's the biggest draw of these small agencies right now, and some do it way better than others.
>>22283051
I can think of three agencies that already don't have a problem with adopting existing VTuber characters. It depends on a lot of factors, but if you're joining a reputable agency and don't have a big audience already, you're probably better off rebranding. Who owns the character is only an issue if you think you're going to leave the agency but still want to stream. I would get why you'd want that insurance in case you're signing with an unknown and untested agency that might fuck with you, but the established small agencies have proven themselves pretty trustworthy. Just READ THE CONTRACT FIRST to make sure you aren't getting screwed

Oh those were fun...
Normally, you try to establish a culture within the agency that would discourage bullying. Why would you join an agency in the first place if you didn't want to be a part of a successful group of like-minded people that help each other out? But every so often you'll get some shitty people that slip through the vetting process and only care about themselves. It's still the entertainment industry, after all. Suffice to say that this isn't even the most toxic incident I've seen.
Unfortunately there isn't a lot to be done once you let things get to that point. Just keep your head down, learn from past mistakes, and don't let shit get that bad again. Ideally you'd like management (in CyberLive? fucking lol) to intervene before then, calm things down, and resort to disciplinary measures as a last resort if it's so bad that it's affecting morale. You're all in this together at the end of the day. Unless you graduate, of course

Not true at all, it's more a question of what type of community you have and the people you've networked with. There's plenty of people without even partner numbers that run fairly successful subathons that make it into the low hundreds of subs. A lot of people will show up just for them, but it's something that pays off better the more active and giving your community is, the more you've advertised it and the more your "support network" (something everyone should have at some point) has helped you get the word out.

That's what I've said, it fully depends on the type of community you have and less so your CCV, because tons of these subathons are held by small streamers that just have that type of community. Obviously more CCV will mean more subs typically, but it's definitely not tied to that when you've got people with 20 viewers pulling hundreds of subs fairly consistently. As for voice, as long as it's listenable, I don't mind any sort of voice, though my preference is a voice like NIJISANJI EN Shu or Sonny as a perfect range, and as you know, Sonny does shota voice occasionally so I might like it, but I can't give you any real feedback unless I know what you're offering to an audience

I am glad you took it lightly and enjoyed the draw.
You draw well, the issue here to make it look like a boy does not stem from size, it comes from form.
There are certain masses that indicate if something is male or female. For example, the shoulders on your drawing look perfectly broad, making them broader won't make it look more masculine, what you need is to add the bigger rib cage and proper tissue placement that defines a male.
I like to think of a woman's torso as more of a gentle curve while a male's torso has this barrel sort of look.
The way you lead the hip into the leg is also very feminine. The structure between the glutes and the hip on a man is not as flowing.
Note that you can draw something that looks 100% like a girl and sell it as a boy, pic rel.
Good luck.

quick explanation for how youtube's discovery works and why chuuba livestreams are never seen

- discovery is for the viewer, not for the streamer
youtube sees you like a video based on how long you watch it, whether the tab was active, whether you like, share, comment and other shit on the video. then it learns your account engages with that video. it offers you similar videos that other people have liked in the past. this is why most fresh accounts get broad appeal shit like celebrity news, reality tv clips, sports.

depending on which of the recommended videos you decide to watch, the algorithm learns and assigns you to more specific viewer categories.
>this one liked the cat video but ignored the sports and clicked on the food video so maybe they're more into home lifestyle
and it continues to update its recommendations until it fits you into a category with high confidence. i.e. it knows who you are and knows it can offer you videos that you are likely to watch and stay on the platform for longer.

now think about your average 2view chuuba who is streaming on youtube because they are hololarping. who is watching it? your videos aren't even categorized correctly because you're not putting in the information necessary in your livestream descriptions. so the youtube algorithm doesn't even know where to put your video. much less categorize the one or two viewers who randomly stumble on it.

your indie chuuba videos will be recommended to viewers who also watch indie chuuba videos. but who watches indie chuubas? no one on youtube. this is the same reason you don't get the millions of family home videos of their dog or kids aimlessly playing in the backyards unless there is something specific about it like a funny moment that makes it go viral. your indie chuuba streams are exactly like those but without any of the viral parts since let's plays are dead as a content form.

this is why youtube sucks for indie livestream contents. if you're going to do something on youtube you need to be putting out scripted and edited content that is meant to be consumed by a specific audience. not livestream vods.

i took a huge hiatus and im rebranding my yt with vtuber stuff a week ago so its a bit slow. but my old gacha gameplay videos that i shared only once on reddit accumulated a few thousand views each from 2 years ago. this basically signaled to me that if i had kept going i prob would be able to have a small gacha channel that gets a few thousand views consistently. so now im commiting to it more because i realized that these videos are like investments, over time they will bring more eyes on you and the more content you have the more reach you can get

a mix of both. my best pull one is sitting at nearly 5k views but the luck was really good on that one, the more mundane ones did worse. the rest were basically skill build showcases and comparisons, the best one sitting at 3k, which sort of made sense since the game is small and had little to no resources on optimizing builds

Oh totally, that's why all the biggest indie chuubas are on Twitch and all the ones who managed to get even a small audience on YT have grown significantly more on Twitch.

>This may be outdated, but what I have heard is that making more than 10 ccv puts you at the top % of twitch.
technically true but its still just cope to make people who don't grow feel better. 10CCV if you're part of any community or niche, mildly sociable, and have half-decent quality is easily attainable. it's nice, but really isn't that great

Vtubing is that community/niche which is why it's so easy to grow as a chuuba. There's a lot of people out there who, despite streaming, never had viewers until they got a virtual avatar. That was the only real change they made was becoming a vtuber and due to that they immediately had more eyes on them even after the major boom.
