Ok, after some 7 hours of coding I'm finally done gathering all the stories currently published in the archive into one ZIP file.

Like I said last week, Windows doesn't allow certain character types so the titles and tags do not match one-to-one and some substitutions had to be made, but they should still be easy enough to find what you're looking for. There may be duplicates here and there, especially if a chapter was included both in the main archive and the Series entry list, I didn't create any checks for duplicates just to save time.

I also saved a log file of all the files I wasn't able to access, so this might be a good place to start cleaning up the archive of stories that have been taken down. Out of 912 links in the spreadsheet, I have 873 files saved so I think there wasn't much missed, if any at all.

Ironically, the most annoying parts were figuring out how to extract the text out of some of the least-used sites (ControlC and Non-Published GDocs). For the latter I just gave up and saved them all manually, along with all the screenshots that are still up.

It's good to help. Funny, I haven't released any stories in a while but at least I can still contribute, between this and the new archive.

Definitely a valiant effort to try to do this, though, especially manually. I went just a small step further though and used the same HTML template for all the stories for consistency, because saving webpages directly doesn't always work, or looks incredibly wonky viewed offline because of CSS imports and what-not. It was a good exercise in extracting just what I want out of HTML pages, if anything.

AO3 does offer a download option for all chapters in one file, though, and that was pretty awesome. The biggest pain in the ass were the GDocs that were not published, since I had to open each one of them manually to copy the data.

It could be a little more polished but I think it does the job.

What's /wg/'s opinion on describing (You)? I just had a character describe the protagonist as having 'curly brown hair, a red beard', then went back and deleted it because I immediately realized I was describing myself - because I self-insert as (You) by default, but then so do other anons and I don't want to take them out of the story by, essentially, describing somebody else. However, it does start getting pretty damn silly when Anon has a personality and a trajectory across multiple chapters but chuubas are still visually treating him as a faceless doujin protagonist. What's the middle ground? Does there *have* to be a middle ground? Like, I was reading Footsteps Across Time yesterday evening and I had no trouble self-inserting as Florus even though it was written in the first person, so maybe I'm making a big deal out of something that really isn't.

I think if you're goign to the trouble of having it be a self-insert fic, bringing awareness to specific immutable traits like that really doesn't work in the stories favour. People can handle differences of personality and vague physical ones, like '(You) but tall and French' is simpler to digest I hope than '(You), but with a full character description that clearly paints a different picture.' There's limits and everyone's is different, but I find it's always safer to air on the side of non-physical aspects being what's notable.

Am author of Footsteps, and I actually had a conversation about this with someone yesterday. I'm a firm believer that there doesn't need to be a middle ground, or at the very least it's a lot larger than people think. I write Florus with a very well-defined personality, I can tell you he's not me at all (even if I took a fragment of myself and put it in him as I do all my OCs). Yet, I still want him to feel relatable (a bit ridiculous I know given his circumstances) and while I have refrained from describing him physically, that's not something I do because I'm afraid it might alienate anons. I may describe him eventually, but ultimately I think allowing the reader to picture him however they want is a great boone. It doesn't even have to be a self-insert. I write Florus as Florus, and anons seem more than able to 'become' him through reading, so it works out. First-person, in a way, both helps and hinders. We don't think in second person, so reading in first person might make it easier to envision his thoughts as (your) thoughts.

This is addressing all of you at the same time so I won't bother tagging. The BIGGEST problem with putting a description to something that previously did not is the destruction of immersion. Now that may sound obvious to you, but not quite what you may be thinking. You're worried the reader won't be able to self-insert anymore. That's not a problem, most people here don't actually self-insert. The major problem here is that you'll be breaking the image they've already constructed in their head by doing it. That's a big deal breaker. I think, in my honest opinion, that if you haven't already described your character at the start, and you've already established him through writing, putting in some info that can break that mental image each reader has made in their minds, that's just a bad choice. Maybe what makes it so fun for that story is the way they imagine X, and you'll be telling them it's actually Y, that may suck some fun out of it. I wouldn't do it if I were you.

I was kind of internally thinking the same thing even as I typed what I did, yeah I don't think I'm going to describe him. Whatever way Florus is viewed by the reader, that's enough. It would be very destructive to just describe him out of the blue like that, and ultimately I'm gonna say that the story is probably better to visualize without the reader needing to think about what the character actually looks like. I can think of plenty of book series that I read where I just ignored any descriptors the main character had and envisioned him/her however I wanted.

NTA, but it doesn't sound like too bold a claim at all. 2nd person isn't actually a POV that translates to self-insertion. At least when I read it, I read it as "You do X, you do Y". My brain projects "You" to refer to some unknown entity that it's narrating to, which is then reflected in how I visualise it. First person POV thus becomes the preferable self-insert.
Ultimately, I think self-insertion is an active choice readers make, and choice of POV isn't as important to that as you might think.

I think theoretically the way to do it is 2nd person main PoV (or you know whatever PoV the writer can write smut best in), with 3rd person Koyori interludes at the end of each chapter. This lets you get normal smut writing and an outside PoV to Koyori's degeneration while also getting that regression in Koyori's mind from an inside perspective as well while also making it 'rare' enough that the writer won't get tired writing out the PoV.

Truthfully it's a matter of taste and preference. I write in first person because I've found that people will eventually just sort of meld themselves into the character one way or the other. The balance is making a strong enough character that keeps interest while leaving certain aspects vague (like appearance) is way more important for a good self-insert fic than the POV it's written in. 1st or 2nd work, and so long as nobody comes along trying to write a 3rd person self-insert fic, I don't think I'll ever look at a self-insert fic and call it bad for reasons related to perspective, flat characters or poor writing are a bigger issue at that point.
