Actual spoiler discussion: Did NOT expect Calliope to get her ass destroyed as hard as she did. That was funny. More than that, a potentially major encounter was avoided thanks to an Anon here, so that's neat. I'm still struggling with Calliope and Rushia to a lesser extent. Maybe you can tell. I'll try hard to improve in the future; they're honestly what kept this chapter in the oven for so long, and I'm still worried the toothpick has some dough sticking to it. Last time I posted a chapter of Amelove, I wanted to write something a bit different this time. I saw a prompt for Calliope forcing someone to become an immortal friend for Kiara who had a fixed point when they were to die, they specified the resurrections should be painful.

This story is probably not exactly the kind of stuff they had in mind lmao. All the same, this is part 1 of Footprints Across Time. Eventually there'll be NSFW and some spicy stuff, just not in this chapter. Also the slowest burn Romance in human history, technically speaking, if that's your thing.

I like the story, but it needs some work. Despite being long it feels like it's rushing and trying to end fast. That is due to conversations just jumping from speaker to speaker. You don't add if or how the characters are gesticulating, what their expressions are, nothing of the sort. This little snippet, for instance:

>“Fine.”
Could become:
>“Leaving already?” she said, as she wrapped the cloak you tossed her around her wounds

It's also hard to imagine a roman soldier, a roman era Kiara, and just generally people from back then all swearing like they're modern fifteen year olds. At least when it comes to all the holy shits and what the fucks they're throwing around. Personally, it completely takes me out of the story. It doesn't mean that people didn't swear back then, of course, but they used different ones. Bugger, bloody, hell, bollocks, and the like would be more appropiate for those time periods. Mori would still use modern insults though, seeing as she comes from the future, and it would be a good way to distinguish her.

Writing as you see it on this general began with choose-your-own-adventure story threads (later called quests) on /jp/ and /tg/. These by necessity were 2nd person POV and involved an OC protagonist who acted as the audience surrogate. The format stuck as the preferred way of writing here over 12 years ago and hasn’t gone away since.

That said, there’s 0 rules against regular third person prose, or chuubaxchuuba romance. If you write and anchor something like that, it will get archived and read by anons.

Happy to help. In case you need some examples on how to write from people more talented than me, check out First Summer Memories if you want the romance in your story to be a slow burn, as it's a pretty good example. Actually, I'd tell you to check it out if you want an example on how to write romance period.
Given that your story is about enemies to lovers, and that it stars two warriors, you might want to have one, or a couple, of detailed action scenes. Holofantasy is good at that, of course, but if you'd want something more grounded, read Bladed Feelings and Written in Blood.

Reading the first chapter of Holofantasy, it's already raised the bar I set for myself! I don't think I'll be doing a full rewrite of the first chapter (stories almost never survive a full rewrite) I think I'll be going back and trying to incorporate what I end up learning when I'm done reading into the first chapter and then from the second chapter onward, approach this from a new angle. At last my knowledge comes in handy! Roman slurs are very well documented due to extensive writing + graffiti. The tamer ones referred to cleanliness and smell, as well as just regular jabs on somebody's intelligence and civility:

- you're a nest of lice
- you disgusting gas-bag
- you stink like a public latrine
- filthy, scumbucket, trash, scumbag, shit-eater
- idiot, imbecile, moron
- beast, donkey, monkey
- runaway slave, whipping fodder

Just basic being a dick, only different from today's insults by references to Roman life (like the lice thing making reference to somebody who didn't wash their clothes or use the public baths). Fancier versions of this would be telling somebody they had a personality like spoiled or watered-down wine, or telling someone they belong on a cross or hanging from a noose.

Insults escalated to foul language along the same lines they do now - sex, parentage, and perceived degeneracy. So 'futuere' (to penetrate) and 'futuo' (penetrator) were the Roman equivalents of 'fuck' and 'fucker' and used similarly in that they were sometimes pejorative but could sometimes be used less harshly.

Insults of parentage were common too - calling someone a bastard and the timeless one of insinuating their mother was a prostitute. Much worse is being called a faggot ('catamite' would be a fancy English way to say this with a Latin-derived word) - note that being a faggot in Rome tended to refer explicitly to the guy who took it up the ass, not the guy doing the fucking, he was OK. Also faggots were thought to be easy to spot because they scratched their heads using only their middle finger (the lone middle finger reminding them of cock). Incidentally, this made cocksucking an oft-referred to threat, where if you ran your mouth in front of somebody they might tell you to cut it out before they fucked your face quiet.

Finally, overt reference's to women's vaginas (and the clitoris, specifically enough) had a similar weight to saying 'cunt' in polite company. It's not that you couldn't talk about pussy, but that a civilized man would be expected to do so with some subtlety.

For the Rentry and Gdocs links, the latter. 100% me being incompetent. Basically I had a set of links on an Excel an anon here was helpful enough to curate for me, but I couldn't (find a way to) merge the cells that had the tags and titles on them properly and copy the information in a way usable by wget's -O command, so naming what I was downloading in bulk ended up being even more work than saving manually and tagging as it went. God I wish you hadn't asked, this is like that one time I failed Math 101 in college levels of embarrassing.

For Pastebin and AO3 links, the former. Pastebin links as posted to the archive never save properly, you have to manually fetch the raw.pastebin version to get text rather than a mess of HTML. It's a similar thing for AO3.

Alright. Time for bed now but I have a pretty good grasp on how to accomplish this. Pastebin and Rentry both have pretty simple syntax to download the raw document, but the issue is that formatting seems to be completely lost when you save the files, so I'll need to figure that out tomorrow.

AO3 provides an HTML download of every story up in the corner but it doesn't follow the URL the way the former two do, but I did figure out how to parse the inner tags to select just the URL for download so it should be trivial to get every chapter into one document.

GDocs is simple enough like I said. I'll work on it a bit more tomorrow.

I've been sort of doing what I explicity said I wouldn't be doing and am doing a sort of lite-rewrite. I realized that the critique of the story being rushed was a big factor holding me back, ontop of the ways I could improve the combat and dialogue. So I'm going to be chopping up this chapter into individual chapters (1 per every 1 or 2 historical happenings). I've been making good progress actually, the Rome chapter is getting close to finished.

All this extra work will mean it will take a bit of extra time, but the weekend is coming up and I'm motivated to get things up to snuff for what I want the story to be, so I expect I'll have the hard part done by the end of tomorrow if not earlier and I will be able to move on to what was going to be chapter 2. I'll bundle all the chapters together and release it in one go, so if people want to just skip to what I had initially planned to be chapter 2 they can.

I like it, a nice concept with a pretty good execution.
I do have some observation I made while reading.
The first person narration doesn't seem to have that 'roman' flavor to it, in that his wording doesn't feel biased or colored by the times. Then again doing that slow change of a narrative voice over the course of a chapter is a rather difficult task when Im reasonably certain this fic is going to have a lion's share of its content set in modern day eventually.
The 'English' swearing doesn't really bother me because I'm used to the old translation convention trope, and assume it's "translated" from the language currently spoken.
The writing feels a bit rough right now, I feel like it needed a bit more time getting cleaned up... but then again you did say you were going to touch it up later.

That’s when she noticed the stain on her blanket, a deep red mark on her cherished pink sheets.
Then she saw more stains. Her hand was red, too.
Now that she thought about it, her legs felt kind of wet, too.

Fauna flung the blanket aside. Everything under the cover was red, all red. She found the hunter, at least. His shirt was in tatters, little more than a clump of rags draped over his shoulders.
“Haha, oh no,” Fauna said. It was a nervous laugh. “He’s not going to be happy about that.”
He wasn’t moving.
Taking a gulp, she peeled the cloth off his body, revealing a network of scratches, some ancient battle scars, and some that were far too fresh for comfort.

I like it, the slower pace adds a lot more depth to it, as well as giving room in the future for letting subtle changes between their meetings occur; because the way I see it the two ways to do this concept are as either a one-shot that has their past encounters "montaged" and conducted mostly through dialogue or through this way, a series that goes in depth with their encounters as they have a slow burn romance through the ages.

I guess it depends on what the difficulty you're measuring is. I have a fanfic that's not even complete on a couple sites that's like 110k words long because I was younger and a bit more autistic than I am now. That was (and still is) pretty difficult to write just due to how long I've let it drag on for.

Other than that, I abandoned a couple fics on that same account because they just didn't make sense or I ultimately just came to feel they were retreading the same ground the original work was treading. Those got hard to write for awhile before I eventually just gave up on them.

It's of a similar caliber and a lot more like... darker I guess, if you can believe it. It'll be a lot like Lazy Oni in the sense that the morality of the matter will be a lot less cut and dry.

It's a shame because I think this could be an even better story than Sakura Summer given enough work. It may just be a story that comes out very slowly.
