Kyoumen no Nami has great visual and fit the title of the Live very well
Kakusei showed off Suisei's vocal prowness the best
Suisei was peak cute during beaucoup de Bruit Pour Rein and Ego Rock (which also have great visual) and made me go borderline Gosling.

I'm going to be completely honest here, Suisei's live was just... underwhelming.
Mori bias aside there wasn't anything amazing about this live. Compared to her other lives like start in the screen or space for virtual ghost, this one had no hype at all. Sure the new 3D is cool and all but everything else felt really empty and lazy.
Maybe it's because I set the bar too high when it comes to Suisei and expected way more from her. To be completely fair I know Suisei was busy from holofes too and she said she helped the production as well and probably didn't have enough time to prepare for this live. The 2 new songs being really mediocre probably didn't help, MV is nice though.

I showed Suisei's live to my friend who has better ears for music than me and she said she is missing quite a few notes during live singing but that's usually the case for self taught singers. That made me go back and pay attention to it and it does sound scuffed sometimes when she has trouble switching from head voice to falsetto and her voice just dies or hits a note wrong and corrects it afterwards. Her recordings definitely sound much better in that regard.

Which makes me think, how far can she improve just by herself until she hits a brick wall? Even with a vocal coach it will probably take years of practice to build up whatever strength or habits she needs to be an amazing live singer and I don't know if she has that kind of patience. Also there has to be a way for her to train to be able to avoid her extreme voice strain or it will always end up limiting her.

it's pretty much how i hear her as well nowadays. first time you hear her she sounds perfect, but the more you get familiarized with her voice the more mistakes you can hear in it. all things considered i think she still has an absolutely fantastic voice; the mistakes don't do anything to diminish her voice overall for me, and many professional singers also are constantly improving in their consistency. if anything it makes for a more exciting improvement journey, since when you go back and compare you can see that she really is getting better. see >>21484817 vs today.

I look at it from the other perspective: The fact that her performance isn't perfect is proof that it's legit. Generally speaking, the worse of a singer you are, the more studio magic you need to sound good; conversely, that makes it easy for someone who IS a great singer to always sound perfect if they want to go that route. Sui apparently has not, which I consider to be a good thing. I'm of the camp that I will take a more authentic performance of any quality over a superficially perfect one where the performer is essentially just a prop being carried by machines.

Also, the stuff you friend is talking about arguably doesn't apply to any vsinger, any utaite, or pop musicians in general. All of the top vsingers and utaites are self-taught and have little to no formal training, and being able to sing par excellence is probably the least important characteristic pertaining to success in modern pop music. The only musical disciplines where you will find people who authentically possess the level of skill you're describing are going to be ones like opera or musical theater--and guess how those industries are doing these days?

That's a weak mindset to be honest. Just because she doesn't "have" to be good and you can fix it with postprocess and studio magic doesn't mean it wouldn't be great if she could be an excellent singer.
My personal high bar for an amazing jpop performer is Nana Mizuki. She can belt out perfect live songs back to back while running around on stage and she's in her 40s now. And Suisei did say she wants to reach her level, as her dream. It would be amazing if she could get there but i know it would take decades of work, so any small step towards that is already admirable.

She also seems to try to expand on the songs she perform even if they don't quite hit her range. A lot of other vtubers have a bunch of songs cover that they are comfortable with for both their lives and karaoke stream but suisei always try to shuffle a lot of new stuffs in and not repeat performance too much when it come to covers. Sometimes, the new songs do sound mores scuffed by her standard. Warming up / exhaustion/ and sound output adjustment play a role too. The first few songs in the live definitely sound a bit off but audio balance and singing but suisei was at her best around the middle after the outfit reveal.
