I have an insider info that might help understand this decision.
The masculine surname is "Kowalski" or "Kovalski" if you want people to pronounce it properly. They've heard that adding "a" at the end of a word in Polish makes the word feminine (which is to some extent true) and made this little monstrosity: Kovalski-a.
