I think this is true, sadly. The only exception is when it's a family member, because then you have no choice most of the time. But even so, you need to set clear boundaries and try to not feel bad when they inevitably (even subconsciously) try to guilt you into spending more time with them than you have the energy for.

Honestly, I've had bad experiences with like 4 different people with BPD. It's super common and they cling to kind (read:exploitable) individuals like flies on shit. If there's one upside to becoming old and jaded, it's being able to tell people to fuck off more easily than when you're young and optimistic. I'd argue that it is finite actually. Humans have evolved to care about no more than roughly 300 people in their close proximity. We can definitely push that number and follow logic/laws to present sympathy (in an academic sense) for people who are just straight-up dicks, but that's not the same as truly feeling remorseful for them.
