The western indie scene is absolutely plagued with Twitter/Tumbr cunts, and there's no way to avoid drama since they will hunt you, blacklist you, backstab you or even doxx you. In the end, streaming was just not as fun as I hoped, and while I was expecting to meet a bunch of weebs (because Vtubers are JP thing), I found out most people are just normies and Twitch thots who saw a fad and are trying to milk it. A LOT of people fall for the "ara ara oneesan" type, who are usually just ethots from Plexstorm.

The problem goes deeper. Even if you try and separate yourself from the community, they'll still bring drama to your table. It's either that or being ghosted by everyone, meaning no collabs, no new viewers, no growth at all. The problem goes deeper once you realize becoming popular is not about your content or personality, but rather knowing the right people.
An example: Sickly Momo was just a "friend" of a popular guy at the time. Eventually she became so popular she got her own design and moved to her own channel, and everyone followed her. She got affiliate in less than a week. When Melody debut, you pretty much had to suck someone's dick at the Science Team discord to get a raid. If you got a raid, you'd be set to life, but obviously, these guys only cared if you were a girl. They were all commanded by Yin (now Ayumi Oneesan) and Nemurenai Kai. Nowadays I think they're dead because they grew bored of Melody, but back then THEY decided who became famous and who didn't. Other examples include CV (got raided twice in a week, nowadays Partner) and Silvervale. If you were a dude, you had to become friends with someone in there, and even then, most members wouldn't bother because you weren't a horny girl.

Not sure who is the one in command nowadays tho, since the number grew from 1 to 1000, but I still see around that everyone just tries to befriend the popular ones to leech off their popularity.

As someone who used to stream to a 'ton' of people (relative to the time) for a old website that no longer exists with a service that is dead as fuck now, I can also say there becomes an issue as well when you do this and you actually start attracting numbers to the point where you could get money from doing it. All the Vshojo girls pretty much started sticking to each other like glue once they realized they had become big, and then that lead to Vshojo. Big people will only collab with other big people, and small people will try to leech off them.

One example: "Takayama Crimson" would host a Jeopardy stream every week, but would only ever invite the most popular GIRLS at the time. He'd get hundreds of views. He streamed by himself? No one cared.

I got to known a lot of people who had been streaming and/or Vtubbing for years, yet they only started getting an actual following last year thanks to Covid pushing for more people at home watching streams. The downside is that it also pushed for an underground mafia. Some people would even make schedules with other streamers and "pass the raid " to each other. Of course, this was a secret, since they didn't want to be seen as a group but rather as nice people who were nice enough to raid other streamers.

As I saw it, it's better to find "your" content. It's not about how many games you stream, or whether you finish them or not, but rather finding the kind of content you're good at and keeping at it. Some people choose Nintendo games, other dedicate themselves to shooters, fighting games, etc. You'll attract a certain niche with that, and from there on you can start experimenting with other genres. Once you become BIG, you can play anything, but until then you gotta stay more or less consistent so people know what to expect from you. I would usually play shooters, so even boring stuff like Valorant seemed to bring in good numbers, but I was also a weeb, so Nobeta and Trials of Mana also got good reception. Once I tried something out of my own comfort zone, no one cared, because -I- wasn't enjoying the game.

Golden rule is: People will enjoy the content if you're enjoying making it. Forcing yourself will make you and your viewers bored.

I have some male friends who use female avatars, but people are not interested because they use Text-to-Speech. Leaving your stream in the background is what most people do, so they want to hear a coomer-bait girl voice. I also got to see several girls who tried their best at making content, but didn't really get that many numbers. Once they became full on coomer bait, they started getting the big numbers (Snuffy, NoizyBunny, Nezumi Nemurin, etc).

yes, if you cannot grow an audience naturally through your own means, charisma, niches, etc. you have to get boosted by the bigger guy. its called exposure and thats how marketing yourself works. speaking of marketing, discoverability is important to. all twitch has for that is clips, so its important to not neglect your twitter and youtube like it sounds like you were. you can convert viewers from anywhere as long as you grow the platform

if you dont want to have to go through bigger creators, YOU need to change your shit to be more appealing to the audience. despite what you say, viewers notice when someone is both consistent and entertaining and will stick around. if you got multiple hosts on streams, while doing everything else, and were still not able to retain audience, thats your failure.

but if you think thats wrong and you were legitimately interesting, maybe its male vtubing that was the problem. i dont even know if the demand is there in america. try your best in your next thing either way. maybe itll work out better with the different audience.
