Due to the additional landmass that was recently added that causes the northern coastlines of Hololive to become a landlocked sea, there is a suggestion that two straits be added to allow for the 12 affected countries affected to have freedom to travel by ocean again like they originally were.

There are two options, either add two straits, or a strait to the west, and the isthmus to the east could become a canal under Shishilamy's control.

It would be easier to create just two straits to the north in schizo territory because that is unclaimed terrain and would not affect anyone's current land.

I agree with this. just put the straits in unclaimed territory like pic related. The eastern strait should just be put north of shishilamy so any territorial claim or question about how they're construct a canal is null.

Gibraltar is actually a poor strait to make this comparison with, it's very large and deep which makes control of it difficult in this era, if I recall right. Danish straits are shallower and narrower, giving enough control for fort artillery to fire upon the arriving fleet in tandem with the defending navy. Something like the Bosphorus strait is also an amazing example, since it's one that can be efficiently locked down.

Basically, without naval supremacy, the Gibraltar strait is open and just force the attackers into a naval battle to pass, the Danish straits might need assistance from fleets but can provide fire support, and a very tight strait like the Bosphorus (and associated straits near Anatolia) can completely decimate fleets that'd want to pass through them.

Forgot to add: most straits in /vtwbg/ world are very wide, like Gibraltar. This means that it's not really about who controls the land at both sides of the strait, but rather who has the navy to defend/attack it as a chokepoint. This is also why things such as collecting tolls would be probably very ineffective, as you'd need a shitton of ships to collect them and pursue smugglers.

I'd say it's the latter due to the matter of "consent" here. If /uuu/ had a representative that was active in this thread and supported by the thread and they reached an agreement with /who/ to give over the land, I'd be less iffy about it.

The issue is that /uuu/ doesn't have a representative. They didn't have anyone interested, so they adopted "well if you really want it, annex us I guess" stance. I'd say allowing for land to be taken this way would set horrible precedent and is taking advantage of inactive generals.

The fatal flaw with that argument is the fact that until the last map update, the norther oceans were open so there was already a norther passage. Adding straits would be a return to the status quo since the true disrupter was the new land that created a land locked sea.

In the original map, they could just travel northwest past the schizo wastelands and then follow the western coast of hololive until they reached /sora/ (Blue)

The "New" map that landlocks them, would force them to go all the way east through shishilamy, the hug the eastern coast of hololive, pass through Niji and indie territory, and then go all the way past the southern part of the hololive coast to reach /sora/ (Red)

But anon, we're not looking for the most arbitrarily fair solution, if we were we wouldn't have any landlocked country and they'd all be the same size. I think this makes those countries more interesting. They'll be highly motivated to develop ice breakers once the modern era comes. They'll have a strong fishing culture despite not being connected the the maritime trade network half the year. They will have completely secure waters from a military standpoint during winters which is unusual and fun. It brings more flavor.

Personally I don't really think whether the straits exist or not matter much. If the concern is sea access for countries bordering the polar water, then the best solution is probably just not make it (mostly) landlocked to begin with, namely doing away with polar landmass. Even then, the water there would probably be mostly unnavigatable.

Being located between 75th parallel and an arctic landmass will basically assure that it's pretty much unnavigable most, if not all of the year with current technology.

/3/tard here, if we haven't settled on a Final Polution by tomorrow night I'll sculpt out all the options (no landmass (the current state of the globe), landmass with inland sea, landmass with shishilamy strait, landmass with schizoland strait and shishilamy strait, am I missing any?) and get nice pictures so it's all easy to visualize on an eventual poll, and then reps cast votes on it to settle it.
Also, since Climateanon gave the OK and there were no objections (provided we shift /inf/ back into the cold latitudes) I'll assume 15 degrees for the black zone is fine.

The difficulty of setting up shops in a frozen wasteland where the ground never melt and nothing beyond lichen ever grows. I seriously doubt people can extract anything of value more than some seals to club. Whaling is probably the most valuable thing that can occur here (even then the land itself would be mostly as resource stockpiles), but that can also be done in more hospitable regions.

About vitubium/chuubanite. I should note that chuubanite can be found in space because the earth is made from the same stuff that's found in space. Yeah, I made it that way in an attempt to compartmentalise the problems, so that even if one aspect doesn't get definitive solution, the others do, so there are less problems to deal with all at once. Proposal: The Retcon & Redistribution Of Polar Countries
Problem: There are 6 countries (KsonCoco, PPT, ZomG, Stars, Feet, ASP) whose land are within polar ice sheets and glaciers. Unsuitable for civilization.

Argument 1: Nuetralfag's Mistake
Neutralfag wae given permission to distribute land as a third party. However, by the end of the period it was clear he did not commit any form of quality assurance, handing out lands without second thought to 'get this over with'. As such, these 6 countries were given nigh unusable land to fill up space for the sake of completion.

Argument 2: Relative Size of The World
Since the world is Earth sized, the provided comparison map shows that some countrie received an extremely large area of land than they initially requested. A country that wanted a moderate sized land relative to Poland received one the size of the Indian subcontinent. As such some countries were given excess land than initially proposed for the sake of filling the map as fast as possible. Excess land that when partitioned correctly would have enough room to fit the 6 Polar Countries.

Inference: It is clear this mistake happened because the original partitioning of VT world was made without a proper size comparison relative to the 1:1 Earth sized planet. Due to the map's simplistic design, we assumed countries like ggg were as big as France when it turns out it's as large the entire MENA.

Proposed Solution: Countries who find themselves creatively unable to manage a country the size of Europe could donate a small partition of their land collectively to provide enough room to move the 6 Polar Countries to proper habitable zones.

I dont really know much about projections and how they affect things but I've mostly been using equirectangular for the climate stuff. Pic rel, equirectangular earth overlaid with the /vt/ world. There are several small islands on the fetish coast that can house /feet/ and while they are admittedly lack luster it matches with how jannies were particularily prudish when it came to them compared to the pruning of other fetish generals.

Right, so I'm considering a major reshuffle of how our country is gonna work in the near future once Lumi and Yuri leave Cyberlive. It ultimately boils down to the amount and direction a thread's autism has. Mine is mostly focused on the biosphere, so I like to read and write about what kind of plants a place might have (which necessitates some degree of knowledge on climate and geography, although I'm nowhere as knowledgeable as climatebro on that front). Working out metallic ores is also relatively simple once we get the tectonic analysis, although gemstones are much more complicated and not really what I'm into.

I'll try to take into account that, but things like climate analysis are often not very consistent between individuals (see RL Iceland climate zone maps for an extreme example)), so you might want to take mine with a grain of salt. Yes which was some sort of steampunk isolationist world. I think /nasfaqg/ is a tossup between cfa (e.g., Sydney, Australia) and cs[a,b] (Adelaide,Australia or Albany, Australia respectively) the latter I feel would be more unlikely All of these could be plausible climates for nasfaqg, it largely depends on the amount of rainfall the area gets; csa if the area is dry, cfa if its more humid. Most likely nasfaqg is a patchwork of mainly these three zones, minus the islands closer to the equator and the tip of the /#/ peninsula.

I think part of it is because its position and the small bodies of water around them means their climate won't be significantly influenced by ocean currents. While their position right beneath the STHP means their land would be dry, the water around it might give enough moderating effect and moisture to keep it from getting s instead of f. The closest RL equivalent, namely the eponymous Mediterranean, also has both Cf and Cs climate zones, so I guess it ultimately depends on which one /nasfaqg/ prefers. They should get what they want either way, with the main influence being what they eat.
