In the history of japanese idol culture, has there been an occasion where a member who graduated return for a special one time only comeback?

only if they went solo after graduation and were still on good terms with the company. also this isn't with vtubers, since it doesn't feel weird when a more mature, older ex-idol revisits her friends and past life in a variety show or concert, versus a personality and model that 'died' and had their channel wiped.

No. Once you're gone, you're gone. Cover saying Coco can come back anytime was just PR talk since everybody was sympathetic towards her. Management was already ghosting her during her time in Hololive so there's no reason to think they wouldn't ghost her if she'd ask to visit.

Stop with the excessive cope and accept reality.

Once they're officially gone, they're gone. Coco is the closest thing to an actual possible comeback. Her presence is still there even if management wants to reduce her to only being mentioned by one letter.
But it will probably never happen.

Yes. I remember them using some IRL idol from some big group who'd done exactly that as an example when talking about how Coco was still welcome in hololive. I can't remember who said it or what idol it was, but it was essentially as you described it.

I’m more than happy if coco made a surprise appearance in holofes

On a very obscure case, Luca Polka went back for a one-off collab with the Eku Uekura family.
Nijikawa Laki resumed activities as a vtuber after graduating a year ago.
The most famous example of returning graduates is Sasaki Saku of Nijisanji.

Only coco has a chance to make a one time only comeback but I think she will decline that opportunity
