If my own experience is anything to go by, you finish the game at lvl160+ if you explore everything without grinding anything, lategame gives you absurd amount of runes. There's also a really strong talisman that gives +5 to 4 stats which is equivalent of having extra 20 levels. You can afford to spend a lot of stats stupidly. Just get 40 vigor and good enough primary stat on your weapon of choice and you're good to go.

Magic builds generally need more points. On top of leveling hp and stamina, you need to invest in fp as well as your given int/faith stats. Theres also the pesky stat requirements for your weapon of choice. Unless you are confident enough in your dodge timing and stamina management to not invest as much into hp and stamina.
