What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Seeing auditions like those make me more confident in myself but I'm still not confident in applying for anything because of the idea of what I'd have to do pre-debut.
As far as I know they just give you your model but you have to deal with lore videos etc on your own, right? I'm not the most social of people so that'd be a nightmare for me, finding people to help with it etc.

That being said I'd never get in anyway.

You go on a normalfag site like Reddit and scour for audio roleplay "ASMR" scripts.
ASMR script heaven or whatever.
Then you start filling requests and listen to feedback and start writing your own scenarios based on that feedback. Obviously while using separate accounts for everything.
The big advantage people who do the RP script route have is that it's easy to absolutely stuff your CV quickly and that it's content that gets pushed by algorithms heavily.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It doesn't have to be truly unique or original. I just mean not the exact same content format as Hololive, Nijisanji, and Vshojo. Doing something else "but with a vtuber" would suffice. Someone out there is capable of being the Steve1989MREInfo of vtubing.

How many rewards do you nerds have? Do you see any of them as unique or really popular among your viewers?

>> No.19910427

>>19909285
>How long have you been at it?
4 months.
>Do you have specific and actionable things you've identified as areas you need to work on, or are you asking vague and useless questions?
is "i want to be wittier" vague and useless?
>Do you watch your own VODs and try to identify areas of improvement?
i've already improved the basics. no dead air, passable sound quality, i'm good at keeping up with chat and forming complete thoughts. i feel there's more that i need to be doing.

>> No.19910625

>>19910427
>is "i want to be wittier" vague and useless?
Yes. If you want good feedback, ask questions that can lead to specific and actionable feedback. "Witty" is a broad personality trait. Apart from telling you to grow a personality, what can I do for you? Write your own jokes for you? That doesn't make you any wittier and it wastes my time.

Why do you feel you need to be wittier? Do you feel like you're not entertaining when you watch your own VODs? You're not identifying any specific problem, and things like "being witty" come with your life experiences. You just might not be funny or clever. That's fine, not everyone needs to be. Have you identified what you feel your strengths are? If so, do you work to capitalize on those? No one can spoon-feed you "how to steam good," you need to do it for yourself.

>> No.19911086

>Why do you feel you need to be wittier?
makes for better clippable moments and i've been getting more trolls as i stream so i want to be able to "clapback" at them before banning them.
>Do you feel like you're not entertaining when you watch your own VODs?
my friends have told me i'm "decent" as a streamer but only as background noise. i take that as having the bare minimum required to make it but not enough to have that "x factor" where i can blow up and grow quickly.
>Have you identified what you feel your strengths are?
i don't even know at this point. is filling and having zero dead air in my streams a "strength" or is that just the baseline that every other streamer is expected to have? if had to grade my streams it'd be B- all across the board. passable as a stream and very stereotypical of a chuuba but nothing about it stands out. that's what i want to improve on.

>> No.19911332

>>19911086
>is filling and having zero dead air in my streams a "strength" or is that just the baseline that every other streamer is expected to have?
This is the bare minimum.

I didn't ask what your friends think, I'm asking YOU what do YOU think when YOU watch your own VODs. Would you watch you? Be honest with yourself.

Why do you want to stream? What's your elevator pitch for why people should watch you? If you don't know, it's time to start asking yourself these questions. You need to do the work yourself, you can't expect other people to do it for you.

>Why do you want to stream?
because it's fun.

Fucking figure it out dipshit, you're really pathetic. I ask you what you think about something and you start with "my friends..." Put on your fucking grown up pants and have an original thought. If you don't know what you're good at, you're probably not good at anything and don't have an "X factor" that'll see you grow quickly. Learn a skill, pick up a hobby, become passionate and invested in something, and share it with your viewers.

An elevator pitch doesn't mean you're unique, it means giving a reason why someone should go out of their way to watch you. Lots of top streamers aren't particularly unique, but they're good at what they do, and could easily give you a reason to watch them if you asked. Who are the streamers you watch whose content you enjoy? What makes that content enjoyable? Try applying that to what you do.

Have you actually tried? No I don't mean DMing Iron Mouse, but (relatively) smaller people who are growing? Literally the worst that can happen is they don't reply.

>>19911086
Everything you're describing sounds pretty baseline, no offense. Your perspective might be skewed because there's so many shitty streamers /here/ that it makes the bar seem a lot lower than it actually is.

I get a ton of hate for this opinion, but I really do think it's hard to just "grow a personality" like the other anon said. I like to think I'm a witty person (not that you can really gauge this numerically or anything) but I also developed this over the course of my life mainly in school and online. It became a part of my personality and how I interacted with my friend group. There was a lot of banter and and shit talk which eventually just became habit and now I can do that kind of thing like it's second nature. I'm not saying that you can't improve on this, but it's kind of hard when you're this far into your life where people's personalities don't change much outside of drastic life events changing your perspective or something.

It's probably not something you want to focus too hard on when there's different ways to entertain that may better align with your personality since you're essentially trying to "get funny" from scratch.

So I've only ever done a couple streams just to try it out. I'm not an entertainer nor do I have ambitions to be one. However, I think it'd be great practice for controlling how you present yourself. I've noticed in youtube videos I make that talking normally is way too low energy for what is even remotely worth watching and what people are used to, it's sort of like the Loudness War but for extroversion.

That said, I'm curious how people overcome stream anxiety when living in an apartment/townhouse/etc. where neighbors share a wall. It's harder than you'd think to just start talking to yourself loudly, overly energetically, and desu artificially when you think about your neighbors hearing you. I suppose it's just a matter of getting over it, but I'm wondering if anyone else thinks about this and if you have any tips for pushing yourself through it. It's un-googleable, for some reason every streamer lives in a house on 50 acres of empty space.

tiktok isn't a monolith. this is the same saying "i shouldn't post on 4chan because it's all just racists, they wouldn't be interested in talking about comics" pick the right hashtags and your content will be shown to people want to watch your stuff.

There's your problem, don't look to corporate vutbers for anything when you're an indie, it's not helpful.

Go to Tiktok, look at the ENvtuber or Vtuber tags, and find people with decent viewership. Go through their recent stuff. overzeggs and kenji are two of the bigger ones to blow up from just Tiktok. I know Buffpup is another big one who has one. It's typically a mix of original content/stolen memes, sounds, and content from strema.

pomu's advice is to showcase all the best moments and best talents. the dude is talentless but to him, he thought those were the best moments to showcase. turns out he's an uninteresting NGMI and his best is worthless as a stream but it's still taking the same advice that pomu suggested.

the real takeaway is that there's no formula for audition tapes. 99% of applicants will be filtered before they even see your audition tape. Nina said she did something unorthodox in her tape. Mysta said he took it very seriously because he treated it like a real job application. Mika says you need to be yourself. Luca said just shoot your shot and be authentic but don't go overboard with it. Finana said you need to do research and study the company before even thinking of applying.

all of them go through because they passed the numbers filter first. by that point, Nijisanji is already interested in you and that's when your tape starts to matter. exactly how you do it doesn't matter because you've already caught their attention. no one in Nijisanji is going to be counting the seconds and dock off points because your intro was 45 seconds when the optimal is only 30 seconds with an immediate segway into a karaoke.

>> No.19935778

>>19935353
Yeah, I'd say he got the very basic idea right, though. He wanted to show his best, but showed off collabs way too much. It's more like he's advertising his friend group more than himself. he needed way more solo things in there. Showing how well you can bounce off other people in a collab is a plus, but it's best to do it with a lot of different groups of people, not just a small friend group.

I don't even care about the number filter meme. But if don't take this as serious as a job application, and don't treat is as such, of course you're not gonna make it.
None of the videos in this thread has done that.
And none of them even added what they could do for the company, what they could add.
The first guy could have said he "Loves collabs, because it brings out the best of everyone" and then shown the montage collab parts.
