Why do they even need to "debut"? They're not corporate vtubers, characters tied to brands, that need to adhere to such formalities. Nobody cares about the debut stream after month. Even if a debut is "successful" it doesn't mean the same people amount of people are gonna tune in for future streams. Why make such a big deal of it?

Hyping up your debut as an "event", even if you're just a random indie, still makes some sense, business-wise.
Due to the "culture" inoculated by the big corpos (where, like you can argue, "debuts" really matter and come from), the vtuber fandom is trained to treat them as super special events to pay special attention to.

So what's our random indie beginner vtuber to do? Just "start streaming, lol, no one cares", with no buildup or fanfare, only find single-digit viewers. Or try to play the game properly, with some buildup, networking and a "standard" debut (it's arguably standard for a reason, because it just works better than not doing it this way), where you get maybe 100 viewers at least (consider this - the debut stream is for many vtubers their highest ccv ever), and hoping that at least some percentage of that (who just checked you out because they were curious about your "debut", and there's no such special enticement if you "just start streaming" randomly) will stick around for the long run
