Every board ends up like this where smoothbrains view every bit of drama as some zero sum tribal war between competing factions and any negative news for your faction must be met with incessant and constant shitposting and spam towards the other faction to avoid "losing" any ground.
So the moment there's any kind of Hololive-related scandal Holofags feel an uncontrollable urge to make bait threads about Nijisanji and amplify any possible scandal related to Nijisanji to push Hololive's drama off the board. Then it's met with the same treatment from Nijifags towards Holobronies until the original drama dies down and both sides go back to their respective generals until the next drama activates the fanbase war once again.

You're actually kind of right but for some reason all of /jp/'s old posters in the vtuber thread became associated with being "Nijifags" rather than just being old residents visibly and obviously annoyed at all of the new posters not willing to fit in at all and only being interested in Hololive. I'm not talking about the origins of the vtuber thread in itself but the point in time you're talking about, up to /vt/. The threads used to have literally every vtuber fanbase in the same place without much drama and there were always resident spergs and schizos trying to start artificial shit between them, but there was never any genuine "nijifag" vs "holobrony" stuff until 2020. All of the friction just came from oldfag vs newfag but the latter force became the overhwleming majority and now /vt/ is what it is because of that.
