What is currently the best way to run youtube on your phone so you can turn the screen off and it will keep playing and you don't need to listen to ads? Android if that matters. I want to be able to go lift weights while I listen to streams and generally I am way more interested in hearing than I am in seeing the gameplay so I don't mind not looking at it and instead just hearing

youtube vanced. doesn't need root, just tested it and videos play after screen lock, also has sponsorblock as well as regular adblocking.

Use this, you don't need to root your phone and it comes with AdBlock and other features. I'd recommend disabling the OG app (or at least notifications if your phone is too cocky and doesn't let you), also change the default app for yt links.

The vanilla youtube app is trash. Disable it and get Youtube Vanced; it's based.

For my TV, I installed a VPN program (Hola VPN) and used that to create an Argentinian Youtube account to buy premium with which ends up being like $1.40CAD per month. So now I watch streams ad-free on my TV and it's better for the creator for Youtube Premium revenue.

on my jailbroken iphone i use a tweak called "youtube reborn". it injects some code into the default youtube app to change its behavior. it has settings for both allowing lockscreen audio playback and stoping any ads from ever playing (among many other options) while still looking and feeling like the original youtube app.
you can also sideload alternative youtube apps even if you don't have a jailbroken device, but i believe you'll need to resign your app at a computer once a week to keep that working (if you don't want to pay for a dev account which keeps apps signed for a year)
and yes, i know you asked for advice regarding androids. I don't know how to do it on an android, this is what i know and it's still useful info if not for you but for others (and maybe you'll switch to the superior mobile platform at some point)

I've been using jailbroken devices since i was 14, assuming you already have a jailbroken iphone installing a package from cydia takes as much time as installing an app.
if you're using an iphone and are tech literate, you should have already jailbroken it anyway. it's just better.

Easiest way:
Use youtube from chrome browser
Select "desktop version"
Play the video
Go to home screen
You will not have controls for the video playing in your browser as if it was a music app.

i've been continuing to use the same iphone SE gen 1 (2016 model) since i got it in around 2017. i've had to change the battery on it once since then, but the point remains that this was a budget model phone from years ago that i haven't replaced. if i was into just paying for no reason i'd have bought a newer phone.

jailbreakers are tech literate.
ios has a better user experience than android os, but stock ios is extremely limiting and restrictive in a way that android os isn't. jailbroken ios is the best of both worlds, superior user experience with even more freedom than a stock android. it does require a tech literate person to set up and occasionally troubleshoot though, but that freedom/control over the device with the better user experience is worth it.

One other reason i don't use android, there's no normal sized phones left to buy. the only current production phone i'd ever even consider "upgrading" to is the iphone 12 mini, everything else is too big. but even that is slightly larger than my SE gen 1, which works perfectly as i want it to thanks to my jailbreak and changing the battery.
