this is my current VOD archiving script. it might give you some ideas. there are some design decisions in it that are dumb or lazy but i tried to put some comments about those.

basically the core of it is line 40 that runs yt-dlp. the options i use add cookies (so it'll work with member VODs), save the thumbnail and description (but without embedding them, because that's how i like it), get english subtitles if they're there, and use the older youtube-dl filename template, because when i started this archive in september 2020 that was how all the files got named.

it runs yt-dlp and chat_downloader in parallel to save time. there is a way to get yt-dlp to archive chat logs (it's presented as one of the subtitle languages) but the JSON format seems really dumb and inconvenient to me. it's easier to play back, but 99% of the time, if i'm using a chat log, what i want to do is search it, not play it back. chat_downloader gives me a readily human-readable log with one message per line.

as others have mentioned, you want to use ytarchive for live recording. yt-dlp can do it, and recently even added support for downloading from the beginning like ytarchive does, but that support still seems kind of preliminary and buggy.

I don't believe that gura could be in the state she is now without hololive, I also really appreciate a lot of the other holos even if I don't watch them. Nenechi and mr Koro both feel like they have the same sincerity that Gura even if they express it in very different ways. I still have a soft-spot for Marine, Okayu and the other JPs who despite not really interacting much with gura do seem to like her. And I truly can't bring myself to dislike even the worst of gura's friends in EN.

I think saying you like gura and not cover might be more appropriate for you, unless you are genuinely someone who doesn't care about holo outside of gura. I choose to consider hololive as the ideal and cover as the reality. In that sense, I love gura, gura's friends, hololive, and the people that hold up hololive. I just sometimes get pissy at management as is reasonable.
