It is kinda sorta real thing in that "no boy/girlfriends [outside the industry]" is the standard procedure in idol business. But part of the reason for the "dating is okay within the industry" clause is that shipping sells to the celebrity gossip normies just as well as pure aidoru sells to the virgin otaku. But it also heavily depends on the character and image you want to sell, alternative idols play by a completely different set of rules and most chuubas seem to take after them. Although again, vtubing is already big enough that there are different types of chuubas for different audiences. Girlfriends simulators obviously run on pandering to unicorns, whereas folks like Kagura Mea and Gundou Mirei go into the exact opposite direction with most people falling in somewhere between. So all this shitposting is utterly pointless (and therefore guaranteed (you)s) because it's completely different audiences demanding something out of chuubas they don't even watch.

However, the complete absence of male interaction is mostly a schizo thing that gets laughed at even on 5ch and Futaba whenever it pops up (but for full disclosure, it does pop up, unicorns are real, even if not all that numerous). Although there are also what might be called purityfags, who are not outrgiht unicorns, but do prefer their idols to not have a current partner (but yuri- and yaoibaiting is generally ok), though they don't really care if they used to have one and are fine with the whole thing kept under the wraps for illusion's sake even if a leak occurs, and would prefer male interaction minimized and be clearly corporate and professional in nature. Even then, idols are normie enough a hobby that the normies outnumber the purityfags even on anonymous internet message boards. Aside from people trying to fit in and shitposters shitposting, that might also be why 4chan appears to be the unicorn central of the worldwide web (aside from shitposting): westerners who get into this are likely to be already predisposed towards purityfaggotry while in Japan it is probably harder to avoid idols than be a fan of one. Though I do wonder if those Twitch thots I keep hearing about already groomed an audience who want girlfriend simulators, which are honestly a pretty new thing made possible by modern technology even if celebrity crushes have been with us since forever and Japanese idol industry, well, industrialized them already way back in the 1970s or whenever. Vtubers do seem to get the most amount of unicorns even in Japan though. Based on something a guy on 5ch said once, most likely it stems from the (idol) anime fanbase getting into vtubers, since only in CGDCT shows is it possible to avoid having males present, whereas 3D idols frequently appear on shows with male hosts with male co-panelists and male musicians are everywhere both behind the scenes and in concerts.

On 4chan and more widely in the western fandom you get the additional deal of most people being EOPs and even then most JSLs aren't really that much into idols. So a lot of the posting here is based on clickbait that broke the news threshold in the English-speaking world. Prime example is the one idol who shaved her head after it was found out she has a boyfriend, which I've seen held as some kind of gold standard of idol culture in the West already back when it happened, whereas in Japan most actually condemned her as an attention whore who made a mountain out of a molehill. There might be something to be said about idol culture being more into purity back in the 80s and 90s, but honestly I doubt it's very influential in how westerners perceive the industry in 2020s and would blame distorted images created by clickbait and anime instead. Speaking as an EOP american, I can say that seiso vtubers are a breath of fresh air. Western culture as a whole has been getting worse and worse in terms of degeneracy.
