I think this is actually a very interesting question. There's a lot of flared temper on both sides, because this is 4chan and tribalfags gonna tribalfag, but if we take a step back, I think what's actually happening is that virtual youtubers are a collision between two cultures - the anime otaku side, and the twitch streamer culture, and arguments like this demonstrate some of the abrasions and incompatibilities between the two. The Otaku side want vtubers to be more akin to a fantasy experience they can buy into. It's like, say, watching real-time K-ON. There's an expectation that none of your beliefs or boundaries will be threatened, that 3DPD and this is an inclusive, 2D experience. The character is just the character. There's an unspoken contract - give me this fantasy I want, and I'll drown you in supas. This is especially prominent with Holofags, because, well, a lot of them are anime fans who got into this fandom through Chinks who clipped pre 4th gen Hololive and that heavily edited style of clipping is very reminiscent of anime. People might treat Coco as a martyr now, but back two years ago we had constant >ORANGE WOMAN BAD threads because she brought a level of "realness" that was breaking immersion for many Holofags.

On the other hand, issues of identity are more flexible with western streamers and youtubers. Who you are online is malleable, in that context, as it is for most streamer cultures around the world, even Japanese ones. But that's generally a different segment of the population from the diehard Yuruyuri fans or whatever. While the parasocial relationship is there for both the anime and streamer halves, the streamer fans are generally more interested in the "candor" and openness of streamer culture. They don't want kayfabe, so much as they want the streamer analyzed through various shades of identity. And the streamers themselves are more flexible with their identity. I STILL fucking hate BSapricot for fucking up the patches but I'm not gonna blame her for showing her face online, this segment of the fanbase welcomes it and is alright with this flexibility.

I don't think there's anything wrong with either approach. Sometimes I think the indie tubers are too dramatic and whorish, and sometimes the Holos are too fake for me. But I respect people who like the candor, and people who like the contrivance. That said, it's silly to say which side of the conversation is "right". Many HoloJPs also stream under IRL identities, as do many other Japanese vtubers. Are we going to start bitching that P-maru and Tomozaku Sugita are also in the wrong here? On the other hand, the constant use of Unicorn as an insult is silly too. While some retards go overboard, there's nothing wrong with saying that this vtuber doesn't deliver GFE that I want, so I won't pay or watch them.

The main reason why any vtuber's fanbase even wants a face reveal is because it is seen as taboo. Forbidden fruit tastes the sweetest. Doing this gave her fanbase a momentary surge of satisfaction, a 'peek behind the curtain', and her a whole host of headaches.

With the taboo broken explicitly by her, now people who see her in public will feel entitled to approach her the same way any celebrity or streamer gets approached, without even the fear of community backlash. By presenting her real appearance as directly linked she breaks down the boundaries even further, which is not what you want if you want the 'it's just a character' card in your back pocket to save you from controversy. If anything, that card is already fragile enough; it doesn't need weakening even further. Being a 'character' didn't save Dr.Disrespect from getting shit heaped against him when he talked about covid conspiracy theories or mimicked accents in a way people considered racist; people just say that if you dared to say such things, even in character, it still reflects on the real you. It all depends on who you happen to piss off.

Just by virtue of the existence of this photo being 'official', she's given tacit permission to any dramabaiting site to post her real face alongside any yab; even with a mocking 'mortal disguise' title, and unlike other vtuber communities which could scare these sites off by claiming that they are violating X vtuber's privacy, her own community and her no longer have any leg to stand on. Putting a real photo out as a vtuber is a supremely short-sighted thing to do and opens you up to lots of bullshit you wouldn't have to deal with otherwise.

Yes. If you want to be a vtuber, your real identity must be hidden and this secrecy is the great equalizer that makes it possible for shy, ugly or just privately minded girls to showcase what they can really do and who they really are. That's the benefit of anonymity.

A chuuba who shows her face has no place in vtubing, because she doesn't actually want to be a vtuber but a common e-thot. Inevitably a thot is a thot, so any dishonest chuuba will always show her true colors (face) and thus be filtered from the sight and attention of actual fans.
