You have a point, but I've seen several cases where a translation glosses over traits, meanings or just changes something entirely. It was the case with Nier: Automaa last time I bothered looing for any.
Now, I don't speak Japanese so I can't confirm 100% that it was the case, but according to some Japanese fans, 2B especially suffered because of the translations. While not wrong, they did result in a slight change in narrative. How big said change was, I can't tell, but I do remember reading about it.

If the game really bothered to translate it and there aren't any big changes, then it's all good.

With that said, I have my fingers crossed for Fubuki playing MGR sometime in the future.

Well, for starters - I'm an ESL and I keep forgetting that the Metal Gear franchise was made in Japan and was initially made in Japanese, and not English. I also keep forgetting that Hideo Kojima is a westaboo, so any and all western influences and references that he has ever put in his games were probably put in a way that Japanese people can understand.
Of course, I forgot that the same logic can be applied to MGR and thus my concerns are null and I'm also stupid.

I understand what you mean, hence why we agree with just about all other nip games, playing them in nip is the only way to go. Metal Gear and maybe a couple other games are special exceptions because of the creator themselves making them that way.
All this said, if Friend did play, I imagine playing with English voices and nip text would be fine. Heretical as that sounds for just about every other game ever, English dialog really is the way Kojima envisioned the MGS games.

That being said, you are probably right. It seems that Kojima is one of the few producers to actually take localization seriously and is very involved in the process - the quality speaks for itself, this is one of the rare instances where the dub truly is of equal quality.

I guess my point was just that no matter how good a localization is, there will always be slight differences because some things just can't be translated. This annoys me just as much as yourself, and I have been doing my reps and have been watching anime and playing games in Japanese for quite a while now, as well. Unfortunately I suck at sticking with games, so I have probably started like 20 of them and haven't finished a single one yet, but I'll get there eventually. For me, one of the worst offenders in terms of localization was Yakuza 0. The way Majima and everyone in his part of the game speaks is almost insultingly bad. Nobody speaks like that in real life, it felt like a bad cartoon.

I usually try plugging in a Texthooker made for Visual Novels into any Japanese game I play if I expect having to look up a lot of words, it's usually a hassle and a bit glitchy to get it to work but once you got it going, it works for almost every game, it's a good way to play a game in Japanese and look up vocabulary (and turn it into Anki cards) while you play. I managed to get it working no every Kiseki game I tried, Tales of Arise, Yakuza and a few more I forgot about probably. Only game I remember it explicitly not working for was Persona 4 Golden, but I found the full script for that so you can look up shit easily, too. Sadly I don't think it would work with DQ11 because it's one of these weird Microsoft Store files instead of an .exe, but when I played the prologue, I was able to use the OCR to look up a couple of words here and there, as well.

I do a mix of different approaches, I read all the guides on /djt/, Ajatt, Mass Immersion Approach or whatever Matt's shit was called back then, animecards, moeway etc and then just stuck to what works for me. Skimmed half of Tae Kim, did a Core deck and started immersing and mining after a couple of months because I figured I'd need a bit of a foundation and never stopped since. I don't even do absurd amounts of immersion, usually just my anki reps, an episode or two, that day's FBK stream and maybe some games on occasion. When I revisited Tae Kim in form of an Anki deck I found a year later out of curiosity I ended up already knowing everything in it except for like 3 concept cards. Would highly recommend that approach.

Yeah I basically just did anki for a long time. Wouldn't even say I was doing listening reps since it requires more concentration than I am willing to give it still, since I often prefer to do other things instead of hard focusing when watching tumors. I didn't try proper reading until a bit under a year, starting with DQ1. Bit of a mistake with how open-ended it is with vague instructions, and the low resolution text being hard to read and causing OCR to fail half the time, but it was worth powering through. Anki reps became a lot easier once I finished DQ3 and 4, as actually reading allowed me to start recognizing things better.
Is that Tae Kim deck on the /djt/ site? I could use that since I am ~2/3 through Tae Kim but that's been spread over more than a year cause I am a lazy cunt.

Aren't the early DQs Kana games? I kind of dislike playing games without Kanji. I played a bit of the DS remake of DQ5 when I was starting out but it was also mostly Kana or barely readable pixelated Kanji so I kind of gave up on that. My next step was the Kiseki series with a Texthooker but that one was a bit too ambitious, way too verbose and way too much obscure vocabulary and idioms for a beginner. I can play them now, but it can be a bit exhausting at times still. I just suck at sticking with things so I never beat a game or finished a book in Japanese yet even though I started dozens.

It's interesting that you seem to have a lot of trouble with listening comprehension even though we started around the same time, have you not done any mining from anime? You only mentioned playing games that don't have any spoken audio, so maybe that's why it's harder for you. I do most of my mining from anime and try to play games that have spoken dialogue so I can put it onto my cards as well. Out of my ~8k mined cards, around 7k have audio. I don't have any problems at all following an average FBK stream, there might be moments where I get lost a bit but I almost always get the gist of what she is saying at the very least, even when listening passively while working like during today's stream.

The FC versions are. SFC allowed for kanji usage. I played 4 on DS though which has less height pixels than SFC and it was even more pain. Holy fucking pain. I could cry at how much nicer DQ5 on PS2 is to read. Was also playing the new Pokemon recently and hilariously, while the furigana makes lookup much easier, it actually throws me off when reading. It's too distracting or something.
As for listening, I tend to speed through anime in a retarded way and certainly don't mine it. Not watching at 2x speed or anything but still. I also haven't been watching nearly as much the past year and a half either though. It basically comes down to putting in much less effort than you seem to be. I am focusing mostly on reading since that's where most of what I want to do is. Maybe I should think about proper listening reps. Aside from when I play games, my actual time spent on nip reps each day is ~30 - 60 minutes. Might be time to increase that now that I am seeing results already, so more time would only help even more. N6. I haven't done enough grammar reps proper to do well on even the N5 prep example, though the lack of kanji makes N5 surprisingly hard too. Playing through games is relatively simple without properly knowing grammar cause you can roughly infer things. Obviously you won't get the full, proper story, but enough to be enjoyable.
I don't plan to even attempt the JLPT until I feel I could do N2 or N1, and even then it's p much useless as an actual gauge of ability and only useful if I wanted to work for a nip company, which sounds like hell.

I don't know, I don't intend to take that test and I learn through immersion, so whatever vocabulary and grammar points I encounter isn't in the intended linear order. There might be a couple of super common N5 and N4 words I have never encountered, but I know a lot of higher level stuff as well. I finished an N5 and N4 deck without a problem over a year ago and started going through an N3 sentence deck I found recently, but it's not much of a challenge either and I already knew 95% of the stuff I encountered in it after clearing about half of it. So I'd tentatively say somewhere past N3 but not probably not yet N2, maybe? I don't know of any equivalent N2 sentence deck to test my knowledge, so it's really hard to tell.

My Japanese learning honestly only started "taking off" once I started watching anime with Japanese subs, I really recommend you try it. You'll start to snowball really quick, especially if you already have a decent foundation. I started with easy stuff like K-On and Chuunibyou but after that I pretty much branched out to watch whatever I want to, no matter how difficult. Finished all of Gundam 79 and am halfway into Zeta, watched all of the Fate adaptations, am ~30 episodes into Legends of Galactic Heroes and a lot of other stuff of varying difficulty. It's always super rewarding to hear FBK say something that I learned in the last couple of days. Sotimes I mine a dozen words per episodes, sometimes just one or two, really depends on what I feel like watching that day.

I do about an hour of reps, but I seem to be much slower than you, I can't fathom how you could possibly average 2.5 seconds for one card. And I watch one or maybe two episodes of anime. Depending on how difficult the show is it'll take around 30-60 minutes for an 22 episode. So I guess I spend about 1.5 to 2 hours of studying most days (excluding games). There are freaks out there that do like 6 hours a day, but that's just crazy to me. Also, I am positive that you are underrating yourself. If you have beaten several games and are reading tons, there is absolutely no way you are below N5 level. You're probably not much worse than me, except for the listening comprehension.

For the most part, yes. It's basically a case of "Do I recognize this and know the reading and meaning? Yes, it's this. Maybe, I think it's this. No, don't waste too much time pondering it," and if I get it right mark it as good else redo.
Also I feel like you missed some of what I said. I can listen and get a decent bit, it just takes a lot of focus, and I usually don't put that much focus into listening since I often do other things and rarely give a stream my undivided attention for more than a few minutes at a time. Games and reading in general are easier for that because it's harder to divide your attention between other things while reading, so I don't even try to.
The ~2.6 second average for today is rare, probably my best even. Normally I am closer to 3.2 - 4 seconds. Though playing the DQ games has really helped with bringing it down closer to 3 seconds pretty consistently.
Like I said though, you put in much more effort than I do. I have a lot I want to do and only put in more effort than anki when what I want to do happens to double as nip practice, like games, manga, VNs, etc. It's all about what we care about most that's driving this practice, and for me it's the reading aspect more than the listening one.

I can see where you're coming from, yeah. Priorities differ for everyone. I try to sound out the Kana to a particular word in my head when I read one in order to deepen the connection between the Kanji and the pronunciation even though it takes a bit longer instead of just moving on when I recognize, that's probably slowing my speed down, especially when doing reps. For example, I learned the term 魑魅魍魎 the other day and actually memorizing the pronunciation is taking way more time than the meaning when repping it. It's super easy to recognize and the meaning has stuck, but recalling the pronunciation takes some.time, especially with complicated ones like that. I guess I try to prioritize reading and listening about equally, because one of the major reasons of learning Japanese was wanting to understand FBK better, and sadly there are (rarely) Japanese subs for her content, so you got to adapt, I guess. I care about playing games in Japanese too, but that is of secondary importance I'd say. Though to be honest, I barely consume any non japanese TV/Movies/Games anymore, something about opportunity costs, I feel like I could have mined a few more words or improved a tiny bit when consuming Japanese Media instead.

I do sound them out in my head, but at this time I don't care much if the intonation is correct. Most words I've heard used and have a rough idea of proper pronunciation. Beyond that the baseline pronunciation for nip is extremely easy.
