Luna didn't like being tied to her character and is pursuing a music path, the doujin circle that create the project sell it to sony

Akari project got sold to ENTUM and slowly got killed by it, until she got out and now is a solo project again but she had to change her 3D model

Siro was doing great with .Live until the Sio scandal, .Live was the first one with the idea of Idol streaming with anime avatars, after the scandal they bleed viewers like crazy and hololive get all those viewers because they copied their format

Kizuna ai, is still the queen of vtuber but bleed viewers after they got associated with upd8, they tried to get rid of the VA of Ai, and that ended up badly, now she is a solo project again, but she didn't jump to the streaming format, so she isn't that popular anymore because she still use the old format of short videos

I lived in Japan when this first wave or Vtubers became popular. Personally I liked Kazuya Luna the most. Obviously I am familiar with her main YouTube channel so I can still watch her new uploads there. Unfortunately she faded mostly into obscurity no thanks to her contract with Sony. At least she got more into her music/idol career . I have an Anison compilation I caught after having a bunch of them thrown into the crowd at Mogra and she also released an album like 2020 only 2019? Kind of list track of time but the point is she is active in different ways.

The problem isn't their brand (well for the non Aichan and Akari) it's their system of creating content, they haven't adapted. Most of the OGs came in and still thought that YT was best when you did you 10min little video with enough space for 2-3 ads, the landscape changed and non VTubers were already doing regular long streams which increased ads, encouraged longer time on views and exposure. Current YT algorithm loves livestreamers while meme video creators tend to not stay in it's favor for as long. The OGs didn't adapt and thus died off
