Numbers are probably more important than anything else. Numbers keep your oshi streaming. If they were a 2view for months to years on end and they had some sense they'd have already quit. Streaming to a dead chat for months or years while talking to no one seems like both a waste of time and absolute torture. How anyone could handle that for more than a year is beyond me. It's why I doubt the authenticity of anyone saying they're doing this for any other reason other than wanting to make it.

What's there to learn? I haven't met anyone who actually watches VODs, so people finding a streamer is when they're live. No one wants to watch a 6 hour stream where they can't even interact with the streamer. FOMO is important because it gets followers, even if it's just one. If you play retro games, no one wants to watch backloggers, they want to watch challenge runs. It's entirely based on luck and only luck.

This is false, a majority of a streamer's growth will almost always be while they're offline, barring a few exceptions but you're right that VODs don't get tons of viewership (even Iron Mouse's have 2k views at most which is low when you consider the amount of overall viewers she has and her popularity).

Also false, a majority of streamers who still game that aren't one-tricks are playing "back log", this is true at all sizes. The "backlogger" thing is really just exclusive to 4chan, I've never heard this complaint off this website or anything similar unless it's someone who isn't a variety streamer playing some weird off-brand game.

Partially true. It takes luck, but these odds can be manipulated. The problem is that a lot of people genuinely believe it's pure luck and nothing else so they don't ever try. The more content you create off-site, the better chances you've got, as well as networking with likeminded people to make friends. look at the thing krimbo, takahata, bao, or papi have going. call it a circle jerk all you want but it's done nothing but help those involved.

i do my clipping reps and shilling reps and i have noticed more names that have been consistently popping into chat especially when i do my main content but also if i wanted to actually make a focus on growing i would probably not be playing niche games that i personally enjoy as much and that wouldn't feel fun to me

What do you think is essential for designing a good avatar? Where did you start with designing yours? And would you redebut with what you know how or how you feel in your personality?

Grabbed a good amount references from characters whose designs I like, gave them to a char. designer along with a theme and a few shots of characters whose visual personality I thought fit hat I wanted, and made sure they knew I didn't want the character to be "too sexy" because I'm not trying to be some wananbe bishounen anime boy. It's not overly-masculine/buff either, but I do think I struck a happy medium.

Good avatar:
1 - Face is visible, and clear. No huge beard, tattoos, or minor accessories like glasses or a mask. Or too non-human silhouette - animal ears are okay, but I wouldn't go much further.
2 - No permanent hat. A lot of props (such as headpat), or free assets go on the head. A large headpiece, like Kronii's, means you can't use them well - you get weird clipping. If you do have a hat, make sure you can take it off.
3 - A simple and distinct motif. Counterpoint to two, because a hat works for this. But you want something visually distinct, so you can drop it on top of memes to make them relevant for you. If possible, see if you can get this cut separately from the rest, so you can just drop it, rather than cropping. Moustache, hat, facemask, necklace, earrings... They all work.
4 - Not too cluttered. It's cool to have detail on the character... But too much, and it'll just be an overengineered mess.

Eira and Veleck have VERY good designs for this. Nice and simple (ish), visually distinct; Eira's horns/fluff, Vel's cat ears/necklace/jumper

Started designing mine using the gaiaonline avatar creator over a year ago.
You need a clear, unconvoluted concept. Simple yet unique. The color palette will make or break. Artists will be familiar with the concept of deconstruction, how easy is your design to chibify?
If you need/want to use current fashion fads put your own concept-related spin on them.
If I redebuted I would use a simpler design that highlights my natural charisma and disposition, moving away from an idealized version of myself.
