It's actually a good setup. Not absolute meta but it can definitely take Ws. The problem with the Waluigi/Wriggler setup is it's mainly designed to help you keep first place if you're ahead. If you're constantly getting hit then its a bad setup to use.

Bae's current setup wont help her maintain first, but she never had the skill for that in the first place. Going with this setup is more friendly to actual multiplayer shenanigans while having better handling. It's similar to Fubuki's approach to multiplayer MK. I really do think she has a better chance now compared to yesterday

I'm glad Bae's practice paid off. I was rooting for her. She's definitely got a huge choke curse though, even in Time Trial she would just blank out on the controller during last lap or something.
On that last race it was like a part of her was trying to lose by throwing that shell, and thankfully she just did so well in the first half of the race that it didn't stop her.

Exactly. 1st place doesn't have to worry about anything other than blue shells, lighting, and whatever 2nd place is holding. The 2nd-10th place is constantly struggling to maintain a lead, defensive items, and coins and 1st place can stretch its lead further by constantly going faster.

Getting slapped in lap three is basically a death sentence since you usually lose anywhere from 3-6 coins.

to add to it, aside from a tripole red shell from 2nd, there really isn't much second can do to 1st. Meanwhile, 2nd has to defend itself from 3rd-6th that are getting items like triple reds, boomerangs, fire flowers, and piranha plants which cause absolute havoc. After that, there are triple mushrooms, stars, and bullet bills (While we're making a list, fuck bills too) which is knock-off and wreck people fighting in the 3rd-6th places so everyone is constantly losing coins.

Yeah, it was always somewhat of a meta to avoid 1st place for most of the race because of the threat of blue shells. However because 1st place only has to deal with blue shells, 2nd place's red shells, and lightning, they're hardly getting hit and get to keep their coins to stretch their lead further. Rubberbanding is massive in MK8D but as you mentioned, mid-pack just ends up being a bucket of crabs as everyone just ruins each other's chances of catching up to 1st. 2nd usually gets pulled into this because the person rotating into 3rd grabs a red shells and snipes 2nd all the time.This is all worsened because coins keep 1st further in the lead as all the other positions are more often getting hit and losing their coins.

Add in the fact that MK8D distributes items based on your distance from 1st place and not on your position in the race. Then you just have people getting catch-up items and not "fuck 1st place" items all the time. You can eventually reach a distance where everyone only has a 7% of pulling an item of hitting you (lightning/blue shell).

MK8D is a shit Mario Kart game when you look under the hood.
