A 'yaku' is a condition that your hand is evaluated on and determines its value. You need to have at least one yaku for your hand to be able to win. There's quite a few of them (picture related), but you'll get the hang of them after you play some matches, at least the most important ones (riichi/tanayo/yakuhai/pinfu/honitsu/chinitsu).
