There are people who like interacting with the streamer, rather than passively absorbing content. If chat is too fast and the crowd is too big, that's no longer possible (or financially viable). Thus they can no longer partake in what made them follow the streamer to begin with.

From what I've seen, the average is $600/mo. There are dozens of outliers that give more.
