I don't always think they are a bad thing. Sometimes people just need a starting point to get motivated, that could be a new week, a new month, or even a new year. I do agree about the failing part though, if you do fail the resolution then you need to be able to separate it from having a bad year. One of my resolutions is to continue doing my fitness reps.
