After years of anime i can say it helps, but it will never compare to actually learning it properly.
I took japanese lessons for about 3 months and it helped but as you can guess, it was basic stuff like entry level grammar. This was years ago and i probably forgot most of it but i still understand what IRyS says in japanese during her streams.
JP only streams are still impossible to understand though.

Just give Tae Kim a quick read to at least make sense of the most basic grammar first. But if you want to focus on reading skills, I suggest texthooking vns. Maybe start with something basic like hanahira.

you will need the grammar, even more than just being able to pick out words here and there.
You will be able to piece together something to try and understand the game, but that might be something completely different from what the game is about. Reading a summary in english will get you further in understanding even an easy VN than trying to piecemeal together words

The reason why I had said hypothesis is because when I was around 11 I was a stubborn mf, couldn't afford to buy Kingdom hearts, so what I would do was watch the cutscenes on youtube, I didn't understand jack shit but I would still try to read everything, and suddenly one day I just randomly started being able to read english, Petra has the same experience but with VN and japanese. the main difference here is the alphabet, english and spanish share them while japanese has whatever mess they have going on

I learned english the same way as you, through media. Took a few courses which helped me with grammar but that's.
I've learnt more by talking to EOPs than i did in Eng schools.

I know they both stem from Latin, but to be honest english and spanish don't feel that close, say portuguese, if I were to read some portuguese I could definetly pick on 60% of the words and determine the rest through context. Italian maybe 20-30%. but english not only has way different words, the structure changes a bit. Golden eye for example would be Ojo dorado, but if I were to do a literal translation it would be dorado ojo, which is wrong.

From what I know of the JP members, Flare really is quite a weak player while Kanata has drastically improved, in her mario kart collab with Okayu and Lamy a couple days ago she was pretty much racing on par with Okayu, and Ayame herself is pretty solid.
In my opinion the contenders for top 3 will end up being Okayu Kanata Irys Ayame and potentially one of the other members that grinds hard.
