Well part of the issue here is that a lot of the male vtubers in the scene give off the 'just like us, nothing special' vibe. Which is part of the appeal of many streamers - being bros.

Before, being an idol gave sort of an excuse for dodging putting in the implausible amount of work and dedication to know many of your members and paypigs by name and vague history, because otherwise you'll have to acknowledge all of them to be fair, and that's impossible, right? But once you collab with streamers with that "bro, he's just like me" attitude, that backfires, because then your viewers start thinking, "There's nothing that differentiates them from me. Why is she playing with him and not me? Just because they're a bit famous?" Your audience is made aware of a barrier between them and you and your 'friends', that previously was justifiable, but now does not seem so.

So unironically, intense community engagement is the solution if you want to continue: get to know your audience more. Take note of dozens to hundreds of your members, remember their names and what they talk about in their SCs and chat, play with them often in amongus or whatever FOTM audiencebait game there is, interact on twitter with your fans if they give you a comment you can bounce off, even the nobodies who aren't content creators in the slightest. The barrier is dissolved if the community feels like they're basically on the same level.
