I think it would actually depend on a multitude of factors. Namely the quality of the writing and how often updates on the story occur. A good writer could possibly write a scenario like that to extreme lengths and still make it make sense in a way. Frequent updates would deter the "fandom" of the story from being able to formulate theories on who it could be because they'd constantly get new information that would debunk any theorizing they could have. I'm sure there's some writer here who is capable of it. Though they would need to be extremely determined to see it through.
