SA-X is miles better as a set piece and a "character" but after you know they're just that they aren't scary.
Dread has a few problems because of the fucked up dev schedule but if I hadn't have known that I would have assumed nothing was wrong due to how good it is. It's also phenomenal at how great samus feels to control and the 50 new abilities they put in the shinespark.

The EMMI counter is like a 3-frame window or something and there's several different animations/windows it can use so you can't just get the timing down perfectly.
Every other counter is pretty easy, but when they say the EMMI one is next to impossible they mean it.

I think Dread's exploration, sequence breaking, and upgrades are more dynamic than Fusion's. Fusion's more rigid intended structure for me is right on the line of what I think qualifies as "Metroid" even though I still think it's a strong entry in the series.
Fusion has a better OST and better overall tension than Dread though, since Samus is having to overcome her new weaknesses from the Metroid DNA. It's one of the few in the series where starting off weak doesn't feel like a gimmick, and your progression really feels like the struggle to survive, not just picking up your lost stuff.

But again, I think Dread does a lot of things very well and hits much closer to what I enjoy about the series than Fusion. In particular I loved how Dread finally used water physics without the Gravity Suit for actual level design, and not just as a standard progression roadblock. I also appreciate that it really bridges the feel between 2D and Prime in terms of narrative and tone, where you're playing 2D but with cutscenes and visual elements closer to Prime. It's in so many ways what I was hoping for from Other M and never got until now.

0% means not taking any upgrades like energy tanks or missile packs, so it basically means every enemy gets to a point it can oneshot you and you can't miss any missiles otherwise you're fucked. You can skip some main items, but you do need some essential upgrades like screw attack to beat the game. It is possible, and I think it personally makes the game more fun since it makes you feel stylish as fuck taking on bosses since it requires you to dodge every attack perfectly.

Maybe in the speedrunning community, I'm not too sure, but I know the game doesn't count the mandatory stuff as a percentage. Maybe because they thought you'd need all the items to beat the game, which isn't the case as you can skip stuff like the space jump by learning how to bomb-jump some segments, or maybe because they're technically 'upgrades' and not 'items'. Not sure but that just seems to be how it is.

The SA-X parts of Fusion are definitely better than the EMMIs in Dread. It would have been cool if the EMMIs got more consistently deadlier since the last 3 or 4 waffle from intimidating to easily avoidable. The twist with Adam before fighting Raven Beak was a better twist than the one in Fusion though.
