I used to do this all the time when I was in college, I lived at an apartment off campus and the grocery store down the street was open 24 hours and it was a pretty safe area so I would always just walk over there in the middle of the night and go grab some snacks or something. Sometimes there wouldn't be anyone at the register though and they'd just have a note saying to pick up the phone and page for an employee to come ring you up but I didn't want to do that so I just stood there and waited for someone to notice me, but that only happened a few times anyway.
