I thought vtubing wasn't really popular on the scale it currently is in Japan until the lockdowns happened, meaning that Hololive's rise was roughly concurrent with Nijisanji's rise and it was merely a matter of preference. More specifically, that Baacharu and .LIVE was more popular than either of them in 2019 before it got yabbed to death by Sio.
