Do they have to get permission for watchalongs or can they watch literally anything they want? I can't imagine there's any rights issues since it's not like they're streaming the actual movie, they're just streaming themselves talking.

They don't have to get permission as long as they don't actually stream the movie footage. If they actually stream the footage, they will be banned even if they have permission from the author, like Mel.

There's an infinite amount of potential content thanks to them, and you don't find yourself in the situation where you can't watch the stream because they're playing a game you want to play yourself. Watchalongs have their appeal.
