not all of them are owned by a hololive, some are owned by smaller companies and a lot arent even tied to a corporation at all. hololive is undoubtedly the most popular group however.

Vtubers are pretty much just streamers using an anime avatar. Vtubing pretty much started gaining traction with the rise of Kizuna Ai in 2017. She wasn't a streamer back then, more like a content creator with larping as an idol anime girl with 3d tech. Fast forward to today where she's not that relevant anymore, instead 2 companies overtook her which are Hololive and Nijisanji. They're both vtubing agencies but Hololive is an idol/streaming company comprising of 50+ members while Nijisanji is doesn't lean into the idol aspect at all. The arguments that you see here about hololive and shit are mostly just tribalfaggots looking to get some easy (You)s. If you want some decent discussions, go to the generals. If you want a quick laugh at some faggots, go to the bait threads

Projekt Melody got really popular in Feb. of 2020 for being the first VTuber on chaturbate doing lewd stuff, but she is not the first. Kizuna A.I. coined the term, but there were already people on youtube making videos with virtual avatars.

You would sooner find a suitable explanation by watching streams. I don't mean that in jest, people here will literally start slapfights about which company is better than the other, which individual talent WITHIN those companies are better than the other, etc.
If you're really interested, I'd suggest just exploring what's out there and finding someone you'd wanna watch. The vtubers discussed here are often the more relevant ones, so it's not a bad idea to look around at the threads to get familiar with who the different companies/talents/etc even are and going from there.
