To be fair, hermitcraft also play 12 hours a day every single day and they are all pros at the game. The holos could probably last many years before they got to the point of overdevelopment.
A better example would be scicraft. They haven't reset the server in years and they are basically playing creative mode at this point with how insane their server is. It's an engine issue apparently. Something to do with trying to calculate how sunlight would work when the sun is in unloaded chunks. If you're 10k chunks deep, the world will have to load all 10k chunks above you to calculate if the sunlight above you should be blocked by anything or not.

In saying this; a cubic chunks mod does exist, though its very buggy. I'm sure if mojang tried they could make a solution to this problem, they just don't care enough. If mojang actually cared enough the game would be like FeedTheBeast*1000 (FTB is the name for modded Minecraft).
