The biggest thing vtubing (or vtuber adjacent) has over normal streaming to me is the amount of groups and interactions. Utaite circles, FPS circles, Nijisanji, all of these mix and match and mingle. Most non V streamers are either solo riders or the top of Twitch which is a bunch of annoying unwatchable people like Mizkif and his associates. With vtubers I can watch tons of interactions with games and tournaments/events. Plus, music.
And I'd rather watch guys kick back and play games than watch girls kick back and play games. The fact that I don't think anime guys are gay might also help this. And the fact that I'm a weeb.
Guys in the West really need to improve their side of vtubing as a whole, and it probably will take the debut of corporation males to kick them into gear.

Because male western vtubers are generally bad and don't capture a niche. They don't appeal to men and they don't appeal to fujos, there's just no real niche there that differentiates them from ordinary streamers. It's why there's no HoloStarsEN or male EN Nijis.
If someone could figure out how to sell a male EN vtuber they'd make a lot of money.

The central issue with male vtubers is ultimately that the target audience for vtubers skews older, between 20 and 30 years old. But the tradtional audience for male streamers skews towards teenagers. And if you look at the most successful male streamers, they all have a pattern of serving as a sort of "cool big brother" figure, using edgy language and trying hard to be cool and funny. Think about someone like that guy who keeps showing up in youtube recommendations penguinz0r or whatever. He's clearly and transparently marketing to edgy teenagers. The same goes for people like xqCow and that angry league of legends guy.
This current formula, that is clearly very successful at targetting what's effectively children simply doesn't gel with the vtuber concept or the vtuber audience.

Also, most male avatars are just shit and the best avatar is nearly a girl anyway.
