For newfriends and fa/tg/uys: this is a Chronicles of Darkness (CofD) homebrew being played by the fabulous ladies of Hololive English, running under the Hunter: the Vigil module. As most of the players are new to the world of tabletop RPGs, this campaign is being played as more of learning experience, with fun and entertainment the primary goals.

Your fear isn't unfounded, but I wouldn't worry about it. Calli is running a solid game, and she will be there to remind them that they're stepping into big boy territory now.

Also Kiara is the anti-fuckoff of the party, she can be relied upon to keep shit straight. She even went so far as to read up on all of her merits before her respecc, because she wanted to understand everything fully. Ina I have faith in, but Gura is a strange case. She does good RP, but Scout is an uncouth, loud-mouthed sociopath, so it can be hard to discern whether she's playing her character flawlessly, or just plain being an idiot.

Amelia is a mess of inconsistency. Session 3 will solidify whether she's fit for TTRPG or not.

Perhaps someone can explain how damage works in the other direction, towards nonhuman entities like vamps, werewolves, and those hedge dogs the party encountered in Session 2. Is killing them a matter of filling up their bar with aggro, same as a human, or are their death reqs different somehow?

Also the vamp Tiara shot in her tutorial didn't seem affected. Do they possess some kind of damage reduction against certain attacks, or was 1 lethal damage simply nothing to it?

As a caveat to the following explanation I am just going to be talking about Chronicles of Darkness rules, old World of Darkness handles some stuff differently as does nWoD 1e. Calli might change the rules to accommodate that but that's impossible to say.

It works exactly the same as normal damage rules, which you can read the attached for. The difference supernaturals have is they can alter which sources are treated as which damage type. Nothing changes about how you add that damage to their sheet though, you track it exactly the same way. So if you take Bashing you add Bashing to your sheet, and if your sheet is full of Bashing you upgrade to Lethal, etc. etc. Outside of rare instances full Aggravated means death. They also usually take Wound Penalties the same as mortals do, but that's not always the case. Supernatural templates also tend not to fuck around with Health totals very often either, you're always looking at around 6-10 Health on average. They might provide powers that increase them but rarely anything universal, any singular Vampire could have a a good bit more Health but Vampires by default calculate it the same as a moral.

Vampires treat mundane weapons as Bashing, so while a knife or gun would do Lethal to a mortal it just does Bashing to a Vampire. Vampires are also not at risk of falling unconscious when their Health track is filled with Bashing, and when it's filled with Lethal they don't bleed out but enter Torpor. Torpor is magic vampire sleepy time. Fill it with Aggravated and they meet the Final Death. It's not all damage reductions though, they've got the great banes to deal with (Sunlight, Fire, stake in the heart). Fire deals Aggravated damage, and prompts frenzy, to Vampires while it only does Lethal to mortals. Similarly sunlight is harmful to them while it doesn't do anything to mortals. They also don't regenerate Health naturally and have to spend Vitae to do it, although it's much quicker than a mortal heals and can regrow lost bits.

For Werewolves they have different stuff going on. Guns fuck them up like anything else, they fall unconscious and bleed out like mortals do, but what they do have is insanely better regeneration times. At their base levels it's 1 Bashing a turn, 1 Lethal every 15 minutes, and 1 Aggravated damage every 4 days. However they do downgrade any non-silver/non-supernatural Aggravated damage to Lethal. They can just regen through that stuff, if their leg explodes it's quickly starts knitting back together. Their Bashing regen is determined by their Primal Urge (general power level) but isn't going to get much higher than 2B a turn in most games, and by spending Essence they can regenerate Lethal at that rate for a turn too. If they lose a limb or something through Aggravated damage it regrows as they heal that damage. Silver always causes Aggravated damage to them. The only thing that really alters any of that is Gauru, which is their man-wolf hybrid war form. While in Gauru they ignore wound penalties and regenerate ALL Bashing and Lethal damage each turn for free.

Hobgoblins, like the Briarwolves, work exactly the same as mortals do as do Changelings. Only difference there is that cold iron deals Aggravated damage to them. Hunters are just like mortals as well, as are Mages unless under the effects of a spell. Ditto for Deviants unless they have a Variation for it. Ephemeral Entities like ghosts or spirits take Bashing damage from things that would usually cause Lethal unless their banes (personal weaknesses) are utilised. Ephemeral Entities have to be physically Manifested in order to be hurt with things that aren't their banes as well. Most other monstrous things are either going to be like mortals or downgrade Lethal to Bashing.

That basically covers everything I can reasonably fit into a single reply. If you really care I can cover Bound, Prometheans, Mummies, and Demons in a second as those have more stuff going on.

Fire is the sort of thing you want to use a lot of, just one fancy (and dangerous) fire breathing trick is actually a pretty solid way to get stomped by a Vampire. Fire provokes Frenzy, and Frenzy makes them much more powerful and very single-minded. That might be on escape, but it could as well be removing your head. They get to add their Blood Potency to any physical dice pool or resistance roll, they ignore wound penalties, and can grab and bite with one action instead of two making them very dangerous in close range. So to avoid that you need lots of fire. And, no, any kind of wood. There are penalties involved in driving a stake into their heart but they go straight to Torpor if you manage it. Unlike regular Torpor, which can last anywhere from a week to a century, they wake up as soon as you remove the stake.

No, but also sort of. CofD games aren't really one unified setting but lots of different settings doing their own thing, and Hunter plays fast and lose with that more than anything else. Task Force: VALKERIE, a Hunter Conspiracy, does have Compound Rounds. These are essentially the "If I put in a bit of everything it's sure to work" of anti-monster ammo. Those rounds do Lethal damage to anything and everything supernatural. Not a thing in 2e as of yet but no reason they could be.

Yes.

It depends. Sticking with VtR2e rules the damage sunlight inflicts is dictated by a Vampire's Humanity and Blood Potency, that is to say how close to a human perspective they are and how powerful/old they are. Humanity determines the intensity of the damage, at very high Humanity they take 1 Lethal but at very low it can be 3+ Aggravated. So the more monstrous a Vampire the more sunlight hurts. Blood Potency dictates the intervals in which the damage is death. Low Blood Potency sees you taking the damage every ten minutes, high Blood Potency has you take it multiple times a turn. So fledgling vamps aren't going to go up in smoke instantly but after they're been around for a while then it becomes a pretty major problem. If they fully cover up and leave just their eyes exposed they do get to treat their Blood Potency as 1 lower than it is though, which can help for a short while. If you're running Vampires by Hunter rules though that all works a little differently, basically there it always does Aggravated at either 1, 2, or 3 points per turn based on the intensity of the sunlight and then it can do an extra point or two based on how much of your body is exposed.

Geist 1e's biggest narrative failing was barely having themes to begin with, but 2e isn't not obsessed with it either way, it's 1/8 of the themes of that book. It's also just a solid theme though. Systematic oppression is great horror fodder, isn't particularly covered elsewhere, provides support for the other themes, is super easy to grok, and actually gives them impetus to act as Sin-Eaters. All of 1e's themes remain they're just not so aimless now.

Well that is close to every core book, you're just missing Demon (which is fucking phenomenal) and Deviant (also amazing). You might have missed those as they don't have 2e versions but that's because they didn't get released along 1e but 2e, so they use all the same rules. Speaking of being able to tell, they should all just say second edition on the covers, and have tables of contents that are more than chapter headings. They'll also have appendices for Conditions and indices (so long as they're not backer copies) too. The core book won't but will be called Chronicles of Darkness, the 1e core book was World of Darkness.

The 2e stuff is generally way way better across the board. There are little bits here and there in some games that could be considered downgrades but those tend to be minor or in service of better changes. Like the VtR2e core book has the Circle of the Crone being much younger than in 1e which is kinda bleh, but it's not a big deal. CtL2e has pledges be much weaker and less of the forefront of your ability set, but that's partly because 1e pledges were busted and there is a bigger focus on Contracts being your main powerset. None of that is a deal breaker for me, or most people, YMMV but it's not something I'd worry too much about to start with. You can go back to 1e books when you've worked through the pile of other stuff. Speaking of, almost all of the 1e books are compatible with 2e. Some little bits of fluff won't line up, some mechanics will need tweaking, but generally you'll be good to use anything you'd like. I'd definitely recommend digging into stuff like the VtR Clan and Covenant for example.

If you have a current gaming group you don't have to GM to play something new. If one of the CofD games really grabs you I'd just pitch it to your group, see what people think. I'd probably go with VtR2e or HtV2e as those are easy to get into, but you'd know the best game for them better than I would.

Rules-wise? Almost entirely Chronicles of Darkness at this point with little bits of 1e mixed in for weapon stats as she's pulling from the Vigil core book. Even people who are primarily oWoD fans will tell you that CofD has better mechanics, so this is only a good thing. Much better ruleset, especially for a newb group. Way easier to grok. You're totally right that there was a big clusterfuck of rules at the start but that's mostly been sorted out. She's pulling primarily from oWoD lore right now, at least from the few bits of setting we've seen. Hard to say how she's handle any mechanics thereof though.

It being a Japanese system is kind of irrelevant considering it's pretty much a brand new system. The rulebook is freely available online and I was able to read it fine as a JSL.
The biggest barrier to enjoying these streams would be having a bad ear for spoken Japanese.

This. They finally got me to take the plunge and get into CofD after years of reading the lore and hesitation. I recently bought Core and Hunter books, and am planning to buy my next one soon (most likely Demon, Vampire, or Werewolf as they are my top 3 favorite gamelines for this setting and seem more beginner-friendly)

I wish they didn't delay their stream for so long. I was so excited at the start of the TTRPG, but after all this time I'm not confident that the girls will be able to remember smaller details now that it isn't fresh in their head anymore.

I think it's okay, even if my preferred playstyle is a stricter approach as well. They're new players, Mori is returning to the hobby and a new GM, and this is not just a TTRPG session but also an entertainment product for each of the girls' volatile fanbase.
You can go punish your friends for messing up at your table and have a laugh about it, but for Mythbreakers anything that even seems like unfair treatment or drama will have consequences that Mori is keen to avoid, especially if it leads to one of the players wanting to quit.

It's true that some systems (and settings) are more lethal than others, but in the end it's down to a group's playstyle. As long as everyone is having fun, there's no need to change anything; there's no "objectively wrong" way to play a TTRPG.

This is an oWoD concept, it's not really doable in nWoD although you can flavour supernatural merits as such. As a refresher, or for those not in the know, True Faith is basically the manifestation of total conviction in a belief. Pretty much any religion can spawn a someone truly devout enough to manifest it. Mostly it focuses around not succumbing to supernatural mind altering effects, warding off vampires, and various minor miracles. It's mechanics differ from game line to game line but that's the general idea.

But the whole cosmology and metaphysics of that doesn't really apply in nWoD, and even less so in CoD/nWoD 2e. There are Hunter Conspiracies with faith based powers though, like the Malleus Maleficarum who have holy rites called Benedictions that grant all sort of boons. That's only similar in flavour, not in effect. There are other religious magics too. The blood rites of Theban Sorcery and Crúac from Vampire, pretty much everything a Mummy does, Werewolves often have a religious bent to them, and so on. The major difference is really that True Faith isn't ascribed to a single religion or practice, it's universal among all of them. The religious practices of nWoD are, for the most part, just for singular religions.
