Because running a tournament of 90 was a death march, and you could hear it in the commentary during the event.
Yeah, we pulled it off, and maybe we could pull it off again, but for this one we wanted to ensure that everyone on staff, y'know, lived to see LotB4. 50 was a good estimate of what we could work with in a reasonable amount of time while still putting on a show people actually wanted to watch.

tl;dr: Lord of the Board does not condone crunch and we happen to like our staff alive. We might expand slots for the next one depending on how this one goes, so if you want to see more chuubas smacking each other, prove there's genuine interest. Sign your thread up for exhibitions.

Unironically though, how exactly is the org supposed to let everyone know? Not everyone visits the catalog to see the LotB thread (and it's only up for a couple of days anyway so it's not impossible to miss) and barely anyone who isn't a regular would visit /hfz/ without prompting.

That's not true though? Anyone can participate in exhibitions, including tournament-eligible threads. You still get eyes on your thread and can ask for specific matches that aren't feasible in the bracket to forward some kind of storyline or settle a grudge or whatever. Plus filling the form and submitting something now means you need to do less shit next time, since there's 0 chance of next LotB not being held on 24.
